Hourly Wage:
New Hire: $18.27  ·  90 days: $19.25  ·  1 year: $20.18  ·  2 years: $21.33  ·  3 years: $22.50

About Clerk Typist: 
Performs clerical work including the skilled use of the computer keyboard. Work is varied and occasionally complex. Work may also involve the use of a spreadsheet and a word processing program. While using a keyboard is an essential duty of employees of this class, some in-depth clerical responsibilities may be required. Receives calls and disseminates pertinent information or refers individuals to appropriate agency.  Employees are responsible for making personal work determinations, but such decisions are usually made in accordance with established precedent or departmental policy. Knows the County’s Customer-Centered Culture principles, the County’s Mission, Strategic Plan and Core Values and demonstrates a commitment to customer satisfaction for all customers on a regular basis.

Essential Functions

  • Enters a variety of information, general and technical, into a word processing, spreadsheet or database program using a keyboard. 
  • Updates records and information on computer programs.   
  • May transcribe, from a Dictaphone, letters, memoranda, reports, and other materials.
  • Greets public or other County employees and answers general questions. 
  • Answers telephone and records the identification of callers and their messages; delivers oral and written messages; receives mail, opens, and distributes to appropriate sections.
  • Directs internal or external customers to appropriate office.
  • Labels office files and files correspondence and documents according to established system. 
  • Compares data and makes corrections. 
  • Prepares vouchers, requisitions, purchase forms, etc. and maintains records of supplies and monies received and disbursed. 
  • Orders supplies as necessary.
  • May operate two?way radio to communicate and relay information to fellow employees.
  • May assist in the preparation of payroll.
  • May be required to notarize legal documents.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product. Listens to the “Voice of the Customer “and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.  
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in a related field required.
  • Knowledge of County office methods and procedures, business English, spelling, arithmetic, word processing, and spread sheet programs. '
  • Some knowledge of the Iowa Code.  
  • Ability to make minor decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, regulations, and to apply departmental policy to everyday work procedures.  
  • Ability to make arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a computer. 
  • Ability to maintain clerical records and prepares reports from such records. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public.  
  • Ability to remain flexible and handle multiple tasks.  
Special Necessary Requirements:
Must pass a County physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of employment. Notary Public preferred. Regular work attendance required. Must remain awake and aware of surroundings at all times.
