Join one of the fastest growing rewards/fintech startups in the world - Benjamin! Backed by Play Ventures and F4 Fund, we're all about making everyday actions rewarding. We're looking for an experienced General Counsel to help us take things to the next level. At Benjamin, we give users real cash rewards—what we call Money Moments—for things they’re already doing. From playing games and watching ads to everyday card purchases with cash back, we’re all about putting money back in people’s pockets.
What you’ll do:
Commercial & Product Legal
- Draft, review, and approve Insertion Orders (IOs) and commercial agreements with partners, advertisers, and vendors, ensuring risk is appropriately scoped and mitigated.
- Own and continuously update Terms & Conditions, Privacy Policy, and other consumer-facing legal documents in compliance with evolving consumer protection and privacy regulations.
- Partner closely with Product and Marketing to review external product communications, promotions, and disclosures to ensure regulatory compliance and brand protection.
Consumer Protection & Regulatory Matters
- Handle and respond to direct member complaints, including those that may escalate to state Attorneys General, consumer protection agencies, or privacy regulators.
- Advise on compliance with consumer privacy laws, consumer protection acts, advertising regulations, and fintech-related requirements.
- Serve as point of contact for external counsel on regulatory inquiries or disputes as needed.
Corporate Governance & Financing
- Manage board governance, including certification of board meetings, minutes, resolutions, and corporate records.
- Oversee SAFEs, cap table management, internal equity matters, and coordination with finance and investors on corporate transactions.
- Ensure proper legal structure and compliance as the company scales and raises capital.
Employment & HR Legal
- Advise on all employment-related legal matters, including offer letters, employment contracts, equity grants, and terminations.
- Handle employee disputes, investigations, and claims; partner with HR to oversee and guide HR investigations and sensitive employee matters.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws across jurisdictions.
- Provide ongoing guidance on workplace policies, handbooks, and risk mitigation.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Act as a pragmatic business partner to Leadership, Product, Growth, Finance, and HR.
- Build scalable legal processes and frameworks appropriate for a high-growth startup.
- Determine when to handle matters internally versus engaging outside counsel.
What we’re looking for:
- 8–12+ years of legal experience, with significant time as in-house counsel (startup, fintech, consumer tech, or highly regulated environment strongly preferred).
- Deep experience with commercial contracts, consumer-facing legal frameworks, and risk management.
- Strong knowledge of consumer protection, privacy, and advertising laws.
- Proven experience handling employment law, HR legal matters, and internal investigations.
- Experience supporting boards, financing transactions, SAFEs, and cap table management.
- Ability to operate independently, make judgment calls, and balance legal risk with business velocity.
Ideal candidate has:
- Active bar membership and license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, in good standing
- Startup mindset: comfortable with ambiguity, limited resources, and fast decision-making.
- Strong business acumen and ability to communicate legal risk clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
- Hands-on approach — not afraid to draft, review, and negotiate directly.
- Experience working closely with executives and founders as a trusted legal advisor.
- Passion for consumer products, fintech, and building durable legal infrastructure.
