Job Description Summary:

Under the direction of our General Counsel, the Risk Management and Conflicts Attorney will help review, analyze and resolve legal risks to the firm. The Risk Management and Conflicts Attorney will work closely with both the firm’s General Counsel and Risk Management team on complex conflict matters, including lateral attorney clearances, preservation holds, claims against the firm, document review and ethical screen issues. The Risk Management and Conflicts Attorney will aid in the enforcement of firm policy and procedures related to Risk Management issues and business intake. This position can be based in any of our U.S. offices. This is a full-time exempt position.

Job Description:

  • Review, analyze, and advise on complex and confidential conflict issues regarding the firm’s business intake and lateral hire onboarding.
  • Facilitate communication among attorneys to resolve ethical and business conflict situations with diplomacy and discretion.
  • Work with the General Counsel, Risk Attorneys and Director of Risk Management to develop internal risk policies and procedures.
  • Research, monitor and advise on legal ethics, court rulings, risk management developments and regulatory matters that may affect the firm.
  • Advise and train attorneys and staff on ethical, conflict, and compliance issues and new rules and regulations.
  • Review, analyze, and advise on language for risk policies and procedures, letters, disclosures and waivers.
  • Draft and review conflict waivers, engagement letters, and various other documents to ensure compliance with ethical rules and firm policies and standards.
  • Review terms of engagement and outside counsel guidelines with the ability to identify issues in need of further review for business and compliance reasons.
  • Help the lateral hire team identify, escalate and resolve new hire conflict and onboarding issues.
  • Assist with the ethical screening process for clients, laterals and staff.
  • Assist the firm with client and third-party inquiries and questionnaires, including reviewing attorney bios.
  • Assist with special projects as requested by the General Counsel or the Director of Risk Management.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Detailed knowledge of the rules of professional responsibility including multiple U.S. state and international jurisdictions where the firm’s clients are based.
  • Highly skilled communicator who can communicate complicated legal conclusions to attorneys and employees and can confidently advise management on risk matters.
  • Advanced understanding of law firm conflicts and the business intake process. 
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to effectively multi-task and manage multiple projects on short timelines.

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of law firm experience. Experience within the IP and/or high-tech and biotech/life science sector is a plus. Must have a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and admitted to practice law in the state of residence and/or the state where the work will be performed.

The anticipated range for this position is:

$159,000 - $207,000

Depending on the role, the actual base salary offered may depend upon a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.

A discretionary bonus for eligible employees may also be available based on performance.  Additional information about employee eligibility for benefits and discretionary bonus will be made available upon request.
