    Primary Purpose:
    Provide legal support for the district campuses and departments by working directly with the district’s legal counsel. 
     
    Qualifications:
    Education/Certification:
    • Paralegal Certificate (preferred) or Associate's Degree
    Special Knowledge/Skills:
    • Excellent knowledge of the legal system
    • The ability to interpret legal documents and work with legal counsel to resolve issues
    • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
    • The ability to deal sensitively and fairly with staff, parents and the general public
    • Knowledge of the school district organization, operations as well as administrative and board policies
    • Willingness to execute written employment contract with Plano ISD
    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and written
    Experience:
    • Experience working in the legal field (preferred)
    • Prior experience at the campus level in a public school district (preferred)
    Major Responsibilities and Duties:
    • Support district and campus administrators with complaints, legal matters, and administrative issues, including interpretation of custody, protective, and restraining orders
    • Coordinate subpoena responses for campus staff, including record collection, staff preparation, and attorney collaboration
    • Manage FERPA requests, including: Video redaction coordination with district attorneys and parent communications regarding costs and delivery; Email searches (defining IT scope, converting PST files to PDF, and redacting content such as Review360 reports)
    • Support for Special Education and campus staff responding to requests from parents, attorneys, SSA, or       HHSC
    • Review and process student-related legal documents, including court orders (custody, protective, name/gender changes), CPS and foster care records, and McKinney-Vento notifications; assist campuses in related parent communications
    • Support administrators during grievance and disciplinary meetings involving legal counsel; coordinate attorney availability and draft campus responses
    • Coordinate records requests from local, state, and federal agencies (e.g., CPS, SSA, HHSC)
    • Collaborate with legal counsel on agency complaints (e.g., TEA, OCR), litigation requests, and attorney interviews; serve as liaison with Special Education/504 teams
    • Oversee public information requests (PIR): Supervise PIR Specialist, provide weekly updates, maintain the Open Records webpage, and manage the non-business days calendar (HB 3033 compliance)
    • Assist with grievance coordination: Maintain logs, coordinate Level 3 and 4 hearings, and collect records for attorney-prepared Board materials
    • Maintain confidentiality in all legal matters, including FERPA, subpoenas, open records, and complaints
    • Draft legal correspondence, memos, reports, and staff communications as needed
    • Process and file: Contracts, MOUs, legal settlements, and monthly legal expenses
    • Communicate professionally with all stakeholders and demonstrate ethical, responsible conduct
    • Remain current on state laws, district policies, and regulations related to assigned duties
    • Follow Plano ISD policies, supervisor directives, and attendance expectations
    • Perform other duties as assigned by Administration and/or supervisor
    Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Direct and monitor the work of the Public Information Specialist

    • Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions
    Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
    • Occasional district wide and/or statewide travel; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions; Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
