What you will be doing:
The State of Alaska's Medical Examiner's Office collaborates with communities across Alaska to make meaningful contributions to public health by supporting families, victims, and the community in times of profound need.
As a Medicolegal Investigator, you will support and determine the jurisdiction of the State Medical Examiner by investigating unexplained, unattended, and unexpected deaths. Your role and responsibility will include conducting death scene investigations, reporting, and communicating with families and various stakeholders in determining the cause and manner of death.

The working environment you can expect:
You will work at the State Medical Examiner's Office at 5455 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Anchorage. Most work is performed at the office, but a portion is performed in the field in the Anchorage Municipality and Matanuska Susitna Borough.
Who we are looking for:
The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following in addition to the minimum qualifications listed below:- Knowledge of death investigations, autopsy procedures, infectious disease, and post-mortem changes.
- Ability to apply investigative and analytical techniques; collect and examine data; document death scenes using digital photography, diagrams, and written summaries; collect, catalog, and package human remains.
- Ability to prepare concise and complete reports.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing with different agencies, the public, and grieving or hostile family members in a professional and tactful manner.
- Minimum Qualifications
Medicolegal Investigator 1:
Two years of any combination of post-secondary education course work such as chemistry, human anatomy, medical terminology, physical, biological, or natural sciences, or criminal justice from an accredited college (3 semester or 4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or practical experience such as conducting on scene death investigations; law enforcement work; conducting non-police investigations; responding on scene as an emergency medical technician; working in a funeral home; working in a medical setting that included direct patient contact and evaluation; or in a medical examiner's or coroners' office with practical on-the-job experience that included identifying traumas and manners of death.
OR
Basic Certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators.
Special Note:
The work environment or work may involve exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous conditions and substances, and noxious odors. The work requires the physical ability to lift and maneuver up to 300 pounds with mechanical assistive devices.
Successful applicants must pass a background investigation, which includes a criminal record check for conviction of felony or misdemeanor crimes, as a prerequisite to employment.
This class requires that incumbents occasionally operate motor vehicles and possess a valid Alaska driver's license.
Incumbents may be required to serve on a rotating, 24-hour on-call schedule.
Medicolegal Investigator 2:
One year of professional experience as a Medicolegal Investigator 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
OR

Substitutions:
Advanced Certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators will substitute for two years of the required education/experience.
Basic Certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators will substitute for one year of required education/experience.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1, 2, or 3 levels, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level of the position. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will only occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, and the applicant meets the minimum qualifications of the higher job class and final approval by the supervisor.EDUCATION
