Position Summary:
The Senior Attorney will enhance NAR’s Legal Affairs Team’s efforts on a variety of legal issues affecting NAR’s members, the real estate industry, and the operation of the association. The ideal candidate has litigation management and commercial contract experience, and is a positive detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The right candidate will be able to work independently, while also collaborating effectively with the rest of the Legal Affairs Team and deliver results with a positive and customer-centric approach. The ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and communicate complex legal issues to a variety of audiences is a necessity. Candidates with antitrust, data privacy or employment law experience, as well as familiarity with the real estate industry, trade associations, not-for-profits and tax-exempt organizations is a plus.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Research, identify, analyze, and keep current on legal issues and laws, legislation, regulations and court decisions affecting NAR’s members, the real estate industry, and the operation of trade associations and not for profit corporations;
- Assist with management of litigation, including by identifying and managing outside counsel, developing and implementing litigation strategy, reviewing filings, overseeing discovery efforts, preparing witnesses for deposition, managing litigation files, attending hearings and court appearances, and communicating timely litigation updates;
- Review, analyze, negotiate, draft and otherwise advise on a wide variety of commercial agreements and provide ongoing legal counsel with respect thereto, including contract interpretation, compliance and related disputes;
- Create and deliver legal presentations and education programs to NAR members, local and state REALTOR® association executives, association legal counsel, and internal staff;
- Develop risk management and educational materials, and identify new legal developments of interest to NAR and its members; and
- Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor;
- Must be currently admitted and maintain a license to practice law in good standing in the state of Illinois or the District of Columbia, depending on office location, or be eligible for admission as in-house counsel;
- At least 7 to 10 years of related legal experience as in-house counsel, or practicing at a law firm or government agency;
- Hands on experience managing litigation and related tasks;
- Significant experience and ability to draft, negotiate and review a wide variety of commercial agreements;
- Exceptional communication skills—verbal, written, and presentation to groups of varying sizes and seniority;
- Capable of successfully working on and completing multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision;
- Ability to influence, gain credibility and develop strong working relationships across the team, with business partners, and leaders and decision-makers across the organization;
- Highly organized, and excellent follow-up and follow-through skills;
- Results-oriented with high attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment;
- Ability to think in innovative ways, solve problems and develop strategies that cut across multiple issue areas;
- A team player with a positive, collaborative approach, while able to work independently and take ownership of projects;
- Strong customer relations and interpersonal skills with a high level of response to all inquiries;
- A curious mindset, ability to learn new skills and “can-do” attitude;
- Experience in antitrust, data privacy or employment law a plus; and
- Ability to travel up to 10-20%.
Compensation: $155,000-$215,000
