Position Summary
The Faculty Member and Internship Director is a 10-month full-time campus-based faculty position in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences ( SHSS ) with administrative responsibilities for the Legal Studies internship program. Faculty responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching; course development; student advising and mentoring; service to the school, department, and university; and continued scholarship in the field. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, student recruitment, retention, and placement efforts; program assessment; and engagement in the life of the university. Internship Director responsibilities include supporting students in the Legal Studies program as they seek, secure, and complete internships. This position cultivates and manages relationships with and provides support to internship employers, serves as the primary liaison between the Career Connection Center and the Legal Studies program, and, working with the Legal Studies program coordinator, oversees the assessment (including the American Bar Association ( ABA ) approval) of the Legal Studies program. This position includes one course release (3 contact hours) per semester, which is awarded in recognition of the administrative responsibilities of the position. The position fulfills all responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as defined in the Stevenson University Policies and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Full-Time Faculty Job Description. Rank and title are determined at the time of hiring and will be commensurate with education and experience.
Essential Functions
ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIVITY Coordinate with the Legal Studies Program Coordinator to identify students eligible for internships, provide information sessions for eligible students, and manage communications regarding the placement process. Work with students in the Legal Studies program to identify and secure internship placements. Internships take place in fall, spring, and summer terms. Support students in the Legal Studies program in seeking relevant internships, including providing guidance in searching for internships, developing appropriate application materials, and communicating appropriately with potential employers. Maintain and grow a database of current, past, and developing professional contacts for the purposes of student placements. Manage the assessment of internship experiences and student outcomes using the required software platform; provide reports to course faculty, the Program Coordinator, and the Dean, as requested. Ensure the quality of internship employers and experiences through a regular schedule of site visits, student feedback, and assessment. Promote internship opportunities to students and prospective students and families through various means, including social media and email. Serve as a member of the Career Connection Center’s Internship Director group and contribute to related initiatives and work of the group. Serve as the liaison between the Career Connection Center and the Legal Studies program. Collaborate with the Program Coordinator of the Legal Studies program and the Career Connection Center to identify and develop internship opportunities for students. In consultation with relevant faculty and staff, annually review and revise the college catalog(s) as requested. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY Teach the Legal Studies internship course and additional courses in the field of discipline as assigned. Engage in instructional activity totaling 24-30 contact hours per academic year as assigned by the Program Coordinator. Teaching load is commensurate with rank and includes a 6-contact-hour release per year. Teaching responsibilities include time spent in face-to-face courses and in immediate preparation for them; preparing teaching materials; conferring with and providing timely feedback to students on course-related matters; directing individual and group studies; reviewing projects and papers; evaluating assignments, examinations, presentations, and other course work in timely fashion; supervising independent study projects; and submitting mid-term and final grades. Stevenson University uses the Blackboard course management system. Administrative responsibilities include writing and/or updating syllabi each semester or term; reading and responding to emails; attendance verification, academic alerts, and other reports as requested; and alerting appropriate university personnel to student concerns on a timely basis. Maintain teaching effectiveness by encouraging active student learning, reflecting on and responding to student evaluations of teaching, and adjusting teaching strategies per recommendations from classroom observations, supervisor evaluations, and other relevant sources of feedback. Prepare courses and syllabi in accordance with published faculty guidelines. Schedule and hold at least three office hours per week. Conduct student advising activities including time spent providing students with support, resources, and/or recommendations regarding academic, curricular, career and/or graduate school matters. Evaluate, update, and revise courses regularly. Participate in the assessment activities of the department, school, and university, including all activities necessary to maintain program approval by the American Bar Association ( ABA ). Complete all training and professional learning as required. SERVICE Offer quality advising services to students, including providing recommendations and resources to students on academic, co-curricular, career and/or graduate school matters. Department service includes contributing to student recruitment, retention, and registration efforts; attending departmental meetings; participating in open houses and recruiting efforts; attending and participating in planning and coordination of departmental events; and establishing industry relationships to generate internship and full-time placement opportunities for students. University service includes, but is not limited to, service on university, school and departmental committees. Engage and participate in the life and work of the program, the School of Humanities & Social Sciences, and Stevenson University. Participate in ongoing departmental activities including but not limited to curriculum development and assessment. Act as faculty advisor to Legal Studies-sponsored student clubs and/or honor societies as assigned. Attend all convocations, including commencement exercises. Attend all university faculty meetings, faculty/staff meetings, and relevant academic department/school meetings. SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES Engage in continuing professional development and scholarly activities related to the field and pedagogical best practices. Develop and maintain independent intellectual pursuits, including research and scholarly activities that enhance teaching effectiveness. Attend professional development workshops, seminars, and conferences. Pursue internal and external funding sources to support scholarly activities.
