Description
Responsible for all legal matters involving the Dallas Sheriff's Department.

Responsibilities
1. Evaluates claims in conjunction with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office against the Dallas Sheriff's Department, including:

 claims arising under the Texas Tort Claims Act;
 claims of civil rights violations;
 claims relating to employment issues, including discrimination and wrongful termination; and
 disputes relating to the propriety of Sheriff's sales and the execution of warrants and/or writs.

2. Responds to requests for opinions regarding any legal issues affecting the Sheriff's Department.

3. Functions as legal liaison with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, outside counsel representing the Sheriff's Department, and the Dallas County Commissioners Court representing the Dallas Sheriff’s Department, including:

 representing the position of the Sheriff’s Department in litigation matters;
 responding to requests for information relating to outstanding litigation;
 coordinating the Sheriff’s Department personnel in locating witnesses and documents required by outside counsel and/or the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office;
 assisting in litigation matters such as discovery, motions, coordinating Sheriff’s Department witnesses and documents; and
 briefs the Chiefs and the Sheriff regarding the status of outstanding litigation being handled by the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and/or outside counsel.

4. Acts as the custodian of records for Sheriff’s Department documents. Presents Sheriff’s Department positions relating to legal matters, including employment matters, claims and lawsuits, to the Dallas County Commissioners Court for consideration and information.

5. Represents the Dallas Sheriff's Department in all requests for records by subpoena or under the Open Records Act, and requests Attorney General Opinions where necessary and responds to the records requests where appropriate. Reviewing warrants and other writs to be executed by the Sheriff's Department where requested.

6. Advising all divisions in the Dallas Sheriff's Department on personnel issues and policies.

7. Reviewing changes in State and Federal statutory and case law, and rules and regulations affecting the operation of the Sheriff's Department, and advising all divisions of the Sheriff s Department as to the affect of those changes.

8. Conducts training in the Sheriff s Department Academy relating to legal issues.

9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education, Experience and Training:
Law school degree from an accredited law school, with a current license to practice law in the State of Texas. Member in good standing with the Texas State Bar Association. Two (2) years experience as an attorney.

Special Requirements:
Must meet and maintain all Texas State Bar Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) requirements. Must secure and maintain a favorable criminal history and background investigation. Familiarity with computer usage and related software such as Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Standard office environment.
