Position Summary:

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Assistant General Counsel to join our team. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing strategic legal counsel and guidance with a focus on labor-related matters to support our business objectives. The Assistant General Counsel will collaborate closely with various departments across the firm to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, mitigate risks, and resolve disputes effectively.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert legal advice and guidance on a wide range of matters including corporate governance, contracts, employment and labor law, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to stay abreast of evolving corporate laws, regulations, and legal precedents, and proactively advise the organization on potential implications.
  • Assist in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Collaborate with senior management, department heads, and external legal counsel, to address legal issues and facilitate business objectives including collaborating with HR to provide legal support and guidance on employee relations matters, including investigations, disciplinary actions, terminations, and accommodations.
  • Represent the company in administrative proceedings, arbitration, and litigation, working closely with external legal counsel when necessary.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to develop and implement proactive strategies and initiatives to enhance employee relations, promote a positive work environment, and minimize legal exposure.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of company-wide policies and practices that align with legal requirements and best practices.
  • Assist in the management of outside counsel relationships and legal expenses.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, legislative developments, and emerging issues in the corporate and legal sectors to anticipate potential impact on the organization and provide proactive advice and solutions.
  • Performs other duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the state bar association.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience preferably in a law firm or corporate legal department with a focus on labor and employment law.
  • Thorough understanding of legal principles and regulations applicable to law firms and the legal industry.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess complex legal issues, conduct thorough legal research, and provide practical solutions and recommendations.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate legal concepts and advice to non-legal stakeholders and present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated experience in drafting and negotiating agreements, policies, and other legal documents.
  • Proven track record of managing litigation and administrative proceedings, including experience with alternative dispute resolution methods.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, prioritize competing demands, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.

Physical Requirements

  • Office environment with normal business hours necessary to satisfactorily perform job functions.  
  • Stand/Sit – Must be able to remain in a stationary position up to 50% of the time. 
  • Walk – This position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, meeting rooms, office machinery, etc. 
  • Use of hands/fingers to handle or feel – constantly operates a computer and other office machinery such as a copy machine/printer. 
  • Climbs stairs – May occasionally ascends/descends the stairs to get to other floors, cafeteria and parking area.   
  • Carry weight/lift - Occasionally moves supplies weighing up to 10 pounds for various presentation and event needs.
