The Paralegal/Pro Bono Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating with Organizing Power in Numbers (OPIN) and NMILC’s volunteer/pro bono programs on new model of family preparedness clinics. These clinics will support community members in preparing for raids and the potential of detention/deportation by providing guidance for protecting assets, preparing powers of attorney, and more. The Paralegal/Pro Bono Coordinator will work to build this clinic program, recruit/onboard volunteers and pro bono attorneys interested in this program, organize trainings relevant to the clinics, plan clinics and lead clinic functions, prepare community members for participation in clinics, support outreach about clinics to immigrant community, and collaborate closely with OPIN on these functions.
Primary Responsibilities:
Volunteer/Pro Bono Coordination
- Collaborate closely with OPIN organizers on family preparedness clinics, to build this program from the ground up with a community-centered approach;
- Recruit and support pro bono attorneys and volunteers interested in participation in this clinic;
- Assist in development of trainings to ensure that volunteer legal services are provided in a trauma-informed manner that responds appropriately to participants’ experiences;
- Will lead the organization of clinics on a monthly basis;
- Maintain systems to track, monitor, and manage the time that volunteers contribute to programmatic work;
- Develop reporting systems for identifying and promoting compelling stories that demonstrate the positive contributions of volunteers/community members/clinic
- participants;
- Support outreach about clinics to immigrant community;
- Coordinate specific regular communications to group of volunteers that provide updates and education in their program area and share success stories/appreciations via communications and events, in effort to retain volunteers.
Paralegal Responsibilities
- Lead monthly Know Your Rights trainings about immigration in collaboration with OPIN;
- Design family preparedness legal clinics in collaboration with OPIN, other community organizations, and unions (2 in 2025 and 6 in 2026), that include a public notary and individual legal consultation, and the opportunity to finalize needed documents for family preparedness.
- Provide legal support and coordination in rapid response moments in collaboration with existing rapid response network(s);
- Maintain G28s and representation agreements in case of immigration detention for individuals who have completed the family preparedness clinics;
- Maintain accurate and complete case records through LegalServer for all NMILC clients and projects;
- Prepare community members for participation in these clinics, ensuring they know what to bring and how best to make use of resources;
- Assist families and individuals impacted by ICE enforcement by conducting intakes and gathering information for attorney review;
- Complete forms and applications for relief, including work permits, change of address forms, and more;
- Support team in creating pro se community education materials;
- Participate in community education presentations; and
- Participate in coalition meetings to support rapid response efforts.
Qualifications:
- Bilingual Spanish and English preferred
- Prior experience working with volunteer-based projects (>1 year experience preferred)
- Prior experience in immigration legal services (>1 year experience required)
- Excellent written, analytical, oral, and organizational and time management skills
- Self-directive in time management and workload, while open to seeking guidance and support from supervisor, as needed
- Excellent interpersonal skills; customer service orientation; ability to make volunteers and donors feel welcome, appreciated, and that their work is impactful
- Attention to detail and ability to perform under pressure
Compensation and Benefits:
- Starting Rate: $25.00/hour (full-time, non-exempt), with upward adjustments for additional relevant experience.
