The Role
We are looking for an experienced and proactive Employment Counsel to join Block's dynamic Employment Legal team. You will provide strategic legal guidance on a broad range of employment matters across our global workforce, focusing on supporting the U.S. You'll partner with HR, business leaders, and cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with labor and employment laws, mitigate risk, and foster a positive and inclusive workplace. You will report into our Global Employment Counsel Lead and can work remotely within the continental United States.
You Will
- Provide advice and counseling on a broad spectrum of employment law issues in the U.S., with a focus on California laws, including: background checks, contingent workers, AI, recruiting, DEI, internal investigations, internal communications, performance management, leaves of absence, accommodations, wage and hour, pay equity, terminations, reorganizations, redundancies, and role eliminations.
- Investigate and respond to claims, demand letters, administrative complaints, audits, and other employment-related inquiries
- Advise on the employment aspects of special projects, such as corporate reorganizations, restructuring, and M&A (including performing due diligence)
- Conduct training for employees, managers, and the People team
- Keep up-to-date on employment laws and provide timely and proactive updates to stakeholders
- Conduct audits, employment classification reviews, and support other compliance efforts
- Collaborate with stakeholders and manage projects with a team-oriented approach
- Evaluate employment practices and policies
- Draft and review employment related agreements and templates
- Manage outside counsel on employment matters
You Have
- J.D. and admitted to the bar in state of residence
- 5+ years of legal practice in employment law
- High degree of proficiency in U.S. employment laws (especially California)
- Experience as an employment litigator, representing companies in disputes
- Experience analyzing and providing advice on federal, state, and local wage and hour compliance
