I. Major Responsibilities:

1.  Investigates facts and analyzes legislation, statutory and case law, judicial decisions, legal opinions and rulings, ordinances, and other documents to determine legal relevancy to UMass Memorial Health Care and/or its subsidiaries.
2.  Takes independent responsibility for the Legal Department Data Base by collecting, analyzing and inputting raw data needed for legal administrative and quality matters.  Prepares reports, graphs and other written summaries that measure, track and trend the work output of the Office of General Counsel as requested by the General Counsel.
3.  Prepares drafts of opinions, memoranda and other documents such as contracts and corporate filings for review, approval, and use by attorneys.
4.  Reviews and responds to all subpoenas and other third party discovery requests, including medical record requests, received by the Office of General Counsel.  
5.  Prepares, maintains and tracks retainer agreements with outside counsel at the request of the General Counsel.
6.  Assists with the preparation of votes, executive summaries and other documents necessary for corporate governance.
7.  Assists with response to general patient care related questions, including screening and triaging patient care calls.
8.  Assists with document review and production.
9.  Issues and maintains records of litigation holds issued by the Office of General Counsel.
10. Assists with coordination of law student internship program.
11. Maintains the Office of General Counsel Intranet website.
12. Conducts legal research and prepares reports or summaries of such research for attorneys and others.
13. Prepares draft policies and procedures for review, approval, and/or use by attorneys and others.
14. Assembles, organizes and produces legal and other documents for use by attorneys; prepares exhibits; compiles due diligence materials; and assists attorneys at trial or hearing.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:
1. Graduation from an accredited college.  
Preferred:

1. Certificate of Paralegal Studies.

Experience/Skills:

Required:
1. Minimum of seven to ten years of work experience as a paralegal including experience that provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description.
