Assist litigation counsel with preparation and presentation of defenses in asserted medical negligence claims and other healthcare related matters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Licensure as Registered Nurse (RN) required.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Minimum 4 years clinical experience required.

2. Knowledge of and/or experience with litigation.

1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.  Other duties may be assigned.

1. Assist in assessing risk management and internal control weaknesses; prepare and participate in risk management education to clinical staff.

2. Prepare and track documents to be sent to and received from external experts and internal departments.

3. Review medical record documentation for accuracy, completeness, and standards of care.

4. Organize and index internal medical records and medical records received from outside facilities and health care providers; prepare detailed chronologies for use by litigation attorneys in case preparation.

5. Perform medical literature research to assist in identifying standard of care and subject matter experts.

6. Collect documents and other information necessary to respond to discovery requests.

7. Research policies, including legacy policies, federal and state regulations to determine appropriate processes and procedures relevant to time frame of care at issue.

8. Interview hospital employees and other potential witnesses and prepare detailed reports of same.

9. Supplement and maintain up-to-date information in legal services department’s expert witness database.

10. Interact with and assist outside counsel with discovery, coordination of witness interviews and depositions, site visits and other tasks as requested.

11. Assist in preparation of exhibits for use at mediation, hearings and trial.

12. Attend depositions, hearings and trials as requested by litigation counsel.

13. Serve as liaison between clinical staff and outside counsel, attorneys issuing subpoenas and investigators as necessary.

14. Perform other tasks as requested or assigned by the Associate Litigation Counsel or AVP/Senior Litigation Counsel.

5. Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 25 lbs.
