What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll handle various legal responsibilities relating to CIBC’s U.S. private wealth business, which includes a limited-purpose national trust company, a registered investment adviser, and a Delaware trust company, with offices across the U.S. in 16 states and the District of Columbia. As Counsel, you’ll have daily involvement with primarily internal business clients and participate in business decision-making to ensure that CIBC's legal concerns, risks, and liabilities are identified and dealt with effectively.

How You’ll Succeed

  • You’ll regularly advise on securities laws and regulations, particularly the Investment Advisers Act.

  • You’ll work with and advise Client Service teams regarding client agreements and our Business Development team on referral arrangements.

  • You’ll negotiate or advise on brokerage agreements, nondisclosure agreements, and other contracts, documents, and general corporate matters.

  • You’ll coordinate with Compliance to ensure we have appropriate policies and procedures.

  • You’ll liaise in a proactive, problem-solving manner with other functional areas on matters such as compliance, product development, and sales/marketing activities.

  • You'll draft and advise on various disclosures, including Form ADV and marketing materials.

Who You Are

  • You can demonstrate experience with:

    • Investment management, securities, and fiduciary law. Experience with private wealth or trust business is ideal.

    • Excellent client management skills.

    • Communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, providing timely, accurate, well-reasoned, and understandable advice to other lawyers and non-lawyers.

    • Must be a licensed attorney in good standing in any jurisdiction within the U.S.

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package.  This role has an expected salary range of $140,000 - $150,000 for the Chicago, IL market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position.  The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which also may include a discretionary bonus component. CIBC offers a full range of benefits and programs to meet our employee’s needs; including Medical, Dental, Vision, Health Savings Account, Life Insurance, Disability, and Other Insurance Plans, Paid Time Off (including Sick Leave, Parental Leave, and Vacation), Holidays, and 401(k), in addition to other special perks reserved for our team members. 

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location. Additional total compensation and benefits details will be provided during the hiring process.
