The Role:
The Assistant City Prosecutor performs professional level legal prosecution work involving research, trials, appeals and other activities.  This classification encompasses both entry-level and full journey-level responsibilities.  
The ideal candidate for the role will have graduated from an accredited school of law, be admitted (or pending admission to the state bar of Arizona) and demonstrated working knowledge of the principles of civil and criminal law, rules of evidence, the methods and practices of pleading, judicial procedures and the principles methods, practices and references utilized in legal research.
Salary:
This position is:
  • FLSA Exempt, and will be paid a salary regardless of hours hours worked per week.
  • This position this position is a Grade 413 with an annual salary between $99,900.00 - $133,200.00.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave:
City of Glendale Regular status positions offer:

  • 10.5 paid holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave per calendar year to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays
  • Vacation leave accrues at:
    • 5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours/17.25* days per year)
    • Increases to 6.12 hours per pay period after 5 years
    • Then caps out at 7.6 hours per pay period after 10 years of service
  • Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours/14.25 days* per year)

* Days per year estimates are based on an 8-hour work day

Retirement:
This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
  • Contribution is mandatory, and deducted every pay period
  • The current contribution rate is 12.00%

This position will be open until filled; applicants will be reviewed as they are received.

Essential Functions

  1. Prepares and appears for court hearings including arraignments, pre-trial conferences, restitution hearings and identification hearings; Tries jury and non-jury trials with defendants and/or attorneys.
  2. Reviews the file on each case including police reports, previous convictions, body worn cameras and other evidence.  Responds to motions from defense attorneys; prepares any necessary correspondence and prepares for the pre-trial conference.
  3. Reviews cases forwarded by the Glendale Police Department, Code Enforcement Department and other departments as required and makes the determination whether to prosecute.
  4. Researches case law, writes appellate briefs and provides written responses to motions.
  5. Argues motions before the court.
  6. Reviews dismissed cases for possible re-filing.
  7. Records daily public message regarding cases going to trial.
  8. Files and retrieves case files.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success Factors

Requires graduation from an accredited school of law, admission (or pending admission to the state bar of Arizona) and demonstrated working knowledge of the principles of civil and criminal law, rules of evidence, the methods and practices of pleading, judicial procedures and the principles methods, practices and references utilized in legal research.


Knowledge of:

  • Federal, State and City criminal codes, rules of procedure and constitutional law
  • Judicial procedures and rules of evidence
  • Principles, practices and methods of legal research and sources of legal reference
  • Methods and practices of trial work

Ability to:
  • Analyze and organize facts, evidence, and precedent and identify the determinative aspects of cases and present them in a clear and logical order.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with employees, court officials, attorneys and the general public.

Special Requirements 
  • Membership in the State Bar of Arizona (or pending admission to the state bar of Arizona).
