The Knowledge Management Attorney plays a critical role in enhancing the firm's knowledge management capabilities within the Corporate and Private Equity Practice Groups.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, maintain, and regularly assess knowledge management strategies and systems to support assigned groups (e.g., Corporate and Private Equity Practice Groups.)

  • Create, update, and manage practice-specific resources, including templates, precedents, checklists, and practice guides.

  • Ensure the efficient organization and accessibility of knowledge resources in such tools as the firm’s document management system and intranet.

  • Optimize collaboration between attorneys and offices through targeted and timely communications.

  • Curate other attorneys' targeted knowledge management contributions for gaps in existing knowledge base content.

  • Assist attorneys with complex legal issues by providing timely and relevant information.

  • Facilitate post-mortem reviews of corporate matters to capture lessons learned and improve future practices.

  • Capture and analyze market trends and key data points to share with the practice and its clients.

  • Analyze and improve workflow processes to facilitate matter management.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Knowledge Solutions and other Knowledge Management & Innovation leadership to implement new technologies and tools to enhance knowledge management and practice support.

  • Monitor industry trends and best practices to ensure the firm remains at the forefront of legal knowledge management.

  • Work closely with the Practice Coordinating Partners, Professional Development Partners, and Practice Director to identify knowledge gaps and training needs.

  • Participate in the onboarding of lateral associates and partners by explaining the knowledge management goals, tools, and activities of the practice group, as well as identifying and evaluating any knowledge content those attorneys may be bringing to the firm.

  • Perform knowledge succession planning activities such as conducting pre-departure/pre-retirement attorney and paralegal interviews, and creating comprehensive documentation of key processes, workflows, and strategies used by the attorney, such as drafting templates and negotiation tactics.

  • Foster a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning within the practice group.

  • Collaborate with other business groups, including Legal Talent, Marketing, Business Development, and Client Experience.

  • Develop and deliver training programs and materials to enhance skills and knowledge of attorneys within the practice group.

  • Develop training materials, including presentations, manuals, and online resources, to support continuous learning and development.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and make recommendations for improvements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of the typical workflows and needs of attorneys in the practice.

  • Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills.

  • Proficiency in legal research databases and knowledge management tools, particularly document management systems, with a preference for iManage.

  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong organization, time management, and project management skills.

  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with the appropriate discretion.

  • Commitment to professional development and continuous learning, as well as a passion for knowledge management, technology, innovation, and creative problem solving.

  • Strong knowledge in developing, testing, and training for technology-driven tools and initiatives, including client-facing solutions.

  • Strong knowledge in legal process mapping and improvement.

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.

  • Active bar membership; must be in good standing in one of the states where Troutman Pepper Locke has a physical office.

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in a law firm with a focus on corporate law and/or private equity.

  • Proven experience in knowledge management, legal research, and practice support, beyond mere familiarity with knowledge management tools and technologies, such as databases, intranets, portals, search engines, and document management systems.
