Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are currently seeking a Senior Practice Coordinator in our Client Value & Practice Management department, reporting directly to the Director of Practice Management - Investment Management and Tax.
The role can reside in the Washington, DC, Dallas, Houston, or New York office with hybrid work capabilities and will be responsible for the supporting the business needs and internal operations of the Investment Management and Tax group. The Senior Practice Coordinator is expected to perform all responsibilities with a commitment to providing superior service to the firm’s attorneys, advisors and staff, and maintaining an atmosphere of teamwork and continuous improvement. Above all, the Senior Practice Coordinator must fulfill the needs of the firm in a manner consistent with the Firm’s Core Values.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Proactively identify and analyze issues, assist in developing solutions and delivering results.
- Work closely with Practice Manager/Director on workload management process and utilization oversight through ongoing communication with partners, associates and staffing personnel. Maintain utilization reports and raise productivity issues as appropriate.
- Assist in the assignment of work to non-partner attorneys based on capabilities, availability and developmental needs. Raise productivity and operational efficiency issues as appropriate.
- Review financial reports provided by the Finance Department to assess Practice Group financial performance, identify key performance trends, prepare monthly reports, spot issues affecting Practice Group performance and make recommendations to improve the same.
- Arrange ad hoc, monthly and other periodic meetings, calls and other practice events. Work with Practice Manager/Director and Practice Group Leaders to prepare presentation materials, as needed.
- Regularly attend practice group meetings to understand the business and staffing needs of the practice groups; assist with the preparation of presentation materials as needed.
- Liaise with Marketing, Client Value and other administrative departments on updates and practice-specific communications. Support Practice Group Leaders and partners on initiatives to ensure deliverables and goals are met.
- Support attorney evaluation and annual compensation adjustment processes for the Practice Group Leaders and partners, including review of evaluation forms, guiding partner discussions of evaluation messages, submission of counsel promotions, soliciting partner input on recommended compensation adjustments and ensuring consistency across the group.
- Leverage knowledge acquired as a result of the associate and counsel evaluation process to focus on issues revealed and establish solutions.
- Help plan formal training programs for practice group lawyers, as needed.
- Work with Talent Development and Human Resources departments on morale and retention issues; communicate issues to Practice Manager/Director and work to identify solutions.
- Coordinate needs assessments for new hires, including laterals and entry-level associates, and work with Attorney Recruiting, Attorney Development and Human Resources personnel as needed in lateral recruiting, onboarding and integration.
- Establish strong rapport and working relationships with business services personnel across different groups, as well as strong relationships with key attorneys within the practice and clients at Manager/Director and Practice Group Leaders’ request.
- Work with Accounting, Client Value, Practice Manager/Director and Practice Group Leaders to assist with practice budgeting, expense review and management, establishment of billing rates and proposed pricing and discounts.
- Coordinate hiring, onboarding, managing and offboarding of other timekeepers, as needed. Oversee utilization, raise productivity issues as appropriate and ensure invoices are received and processed timely.
- Special projects and special project management as assigned by the Practice Manager/Director.

Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):
- Bachelor’s degree required
- At least 5+ years of overall working experience, with at least 3 + years of related practice support and experience, preferably in a law firm
- Demonstrated knowledge of health care group insurance, retirement and welfare plans, and general benefit policies, practices and legal requirements
- Advanced working knowledge of MS Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, and ability to work in various software applications as needed
- Superior written and oral communication skills

The anticipated base salary range for this position in New York and Washington, DC is $90,000 to $110,000. The actual salary offered will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, years of relevant experience, certifications or other professional licenses held, job-related knowledge and skills, business needs, and the location from which the work will be performed. Additionally, salary or hourly wages may be only part of the total compensation package, which may also include a full range of health and other insurance benefits, financial and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility), a discretionary bonus, and various paid time off benefits.
