Overview:
Processes legal papers by conducting research into existing customer relationships on debtor(s), restrains accounts as appropriate by applying proper exemptions and preparing case file as appropriate. Processes complex legal papers, such as court orders and temporary restraining orders.
Primary Responsibilities:
Complete account research to identify proper relationship of debtor with the Bank. Answer legal questions in accordance with authority and certification of letter
Acts as an escalation point and/or SME for the team, providing direction and guidance when needed
Apply Federal and NYS exemption test logic and proper fee
Prepare customer letter and case file, including screen shots, customer letters and copies of correspondence with customer and/or agencies
Participate in departmental Projects related to restraints
Apply exemption test logic of all states in the footprint
Process court orders and temporary restraining orders as appropriate, coordinating efforts with various outside agencies
Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management
Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand
Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable
Complete other related duties as assigned
Education and Experience Required:
High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
4 or more years’ of work experience
Demonstrated work leadership skills (team lead, shift supervisor, SME, etc.)
Education and Experience Preferred:
Banking operations experience
Proven ability to multi-task
Proven ability to work under tight time constraints
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
Proven organizational skills
Proven prioritization skills
Ability to exercise good judgment and sound discretion
Ability to recognize time sensitive and urgent matters
Experience as a paralegal or legal assistant in a large law firm
Strong problem-solving skills
Some knowledge of complex court orders and seizures
Expertise with various notices and legal documents
Some knowledge of laws regarding federally exempt deposit types of other states
Working Model/Office Location:
This is a hybrid position requiring four days in office per week
Once fully trained, this position may be eligible to work from home one day per week
Due to the onsite nature of the position, eligible candidates must live within commuting distance to 850 Main Street, Bridgeport, CT 06604
Scheduled Shift/Required Availability:
Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm (+ overtime when needed)
This team typically works one or two hours of paid overtime per week
