Reporting to the SVP, Chief IP Counsel, the Associate Director/Director, IP Counsel will assist in developing and implementing a global intellectual property strategy in support of Viridian’s pipeline programs. This attorney will also counsel clients, manage patent drafting and prosecution, assist in patent landscape activities, review publications, and support business activities as needed. We are looking for someone who will thrive in a highly collaborative environment and wants to be fully integrated into every aspect of the company from research to business execution.
This role is based in our Waltham, MA headquarters. Our office-based employees are required to work in the office three (3) days a week.
Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
- Partner with R&D to develop a worldwide IP portfolio strategy to protect Viridian’s pipeline assets
- Provide legal advice to internal science and business partners on a variety of IP related matters
- Assist in conducting patent landscape overviews, freedom-to-operate analyses, validity assessments, and patentability assessments
- Work on transactions and legal matters supporting Viridian’s research and business goals
- Assist with challenging or defending patents, as needs arise (e.g., oppositions, PTAB proceedings, etc.)
- Work on other assigned legal matters, as needed
- Requires a J.D. and membership in at least one state bar
- Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
- Preference for advanced scientific degree (Ph.D. or Master’s) in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, immunology, or related field with 8+ years of experience
- Experience in patent drafting, prosecution, and landscape analysis
- Must have attention to detail
- Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, and will possess excellent analytic, legal drafting, and oral and written communication skills
- Strong ability to work independently and in teams
- Must be able to adapt to changes and be agile
- Proven mindset of proactive continuous improvement
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to handle multiple tasks
- Strong commitment to ethical standards
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.)
- The salary range for this position is commensurate with experience
