A DAY IN THE LIFE:

The Sr. Corporate Counsel reports to the Assistant General Counsel – Product & IP, and is responsible for providing legal support on a variety of legal matters related to intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and confidential information arising in the course of product development, marketing, and other business activities.  The Corporate Counsel, IP provides counsel on the U.S. and international laws and regulations relevant to the Company’s IP portfolio, products, and services while ensuring compliance with Company IP policies and procedures and otherwise protecting the Company’s interests. 

YOU’RE AWESOME AT:

  • Oversees Company’s patent portfolio and execution of the patent strategy by managing brainstorming sessions, leading the inventor incentive program, preparing new ideas for consideration by Company’s patent review committee, overseeing external counsel in the preparation, prosecution, and maintenance of U.S. and international patents.
  • Monitors the competitive landscape, performs patent analyses, and provides recommendations to inform product development, patent prosecution, enforcement strategies, and other company decisions.
  • Manages Company’s trademark portfolio by overseeing external counsel in U.S. and international clearance searches to assess the availability of proposed trademarks, preparation, prosecution, and renewal of U.S. and international trademarks.
  • Monitors the competitive landscape, performs trademark analyses, and provides recommendations to inform product naming, trademark prosecution, enforcement strategies, and other company decisions.
  • Advises on open-source software use, licensing, and compliance strategies.
  • Collaborates with Commercial Contracts team, as requested, on a variety of IP-related agreements.
  • Provides input in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, legal guidance documents, and training materials relevant to intellectual property.
  • Proactively identifies related business and legal risks and collaborates cross-functionally to offer risk mitigation strategies and creative solutions.
  • Provides input in the development, and helps implement and administer, process improvements and systems for administration of key Legal Department responsibilities and product knowledge management program.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, including Privacy/HIPAA, and other legal and regulatory requirements.

EXTRA AWESOME:

  • Law degree (JD or equivalent) with excellent academic credentials and a license to practice in the state of California or licensed in another state and registered as In-House Counsel in California.
  • Admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Educational background in mechanical, electrical, or software engineering.
  • High level of integrity supported by sound judgment and ethics.
  • 7+ years of relevant intellectual property and legal experience, including at least 2+ years of in-house experience with a medical device or biotech company. Other experience in a technology environment or with software for healthcare-related applications will also be considered. 
  • Significant experience with and breadth of knowledge of U.S. and International patent, copyright, trade secret and trademark laws.
  • Working understanding of international, federal, and state rules and regulations applicable to medical device companies.
  • IP transactions, IP litigation, Opposition, IPR or other related experience preferred.

WHEN & WHERE YOU’LL WORK:

Hybrid: This role will be a mix of in-office work at our corporate headquarters in Del Mar, CA and remote work. This position is expected to be in office 2-3 days per week, however may vary depending on business demands. 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The starting base pay range for this position is $234,000 - $256,000 annually. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus, equity, and a robust benefits package.
