Description

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. 
 
The Performance and Innovation Division (PID) drives organizational excellence by leveraging data, process improvement, and innovative strategies to enhance efficiency and service delivery across the agency. The division is a cross-functional team that solves problems and generates insights for OAG leadership.

 
Position Overview
The Performance and Innovation Division uses data analytics, technology solutions, and strategic research to strengthen operations across the Maryland Office of the Attorney General and support the office's legal mission.
 
The Performance and Innovation Intern will help modernize OAG operations through technical and data-focused projects. This role offers hands-on experience in data analysis, AI implementation, and strategic research within a government legal setting.
 
Projects will be determined cooperatively with the intern and PID leadership based on organizational priorities and the intern's interests and skills.
 
Key Responsibilities
The intern will complete one or more distinct projects that create efficiencies or provide evidence-based insights into OAG operations. Project tasks may include:
  • Assess data quality and prepare datasets for analysis
  • Analyze performance metrics and support data-driven decision-making
  • Conduct research and develop process improvement recommendations
  • Build dashboards, reports, and presentations for OAG leadership
  • Develop or tune artificial intelligence or machine learning solutions
  • Opportunity to present findings to senior OAG leadership
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Data Analytics, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Public Administration, Business, Information Systems, or a related field
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable working independently and taking initiative on technical projects
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of a standard data analytics platform (R, Power BI, Python, or similar)
Technical Skills & Interests
  • Preferred: Experience or strong interest in low-code/no-code platforms (Power Automate, Power Apps)
  • Preferred: Interest in Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Plus: Familiarity with SQL or database structures (helpful but not required for most projects)
