Job Description
Seeking a Law Clerk I to work on-sight in support of the Civil Rights Division in Washington, DC. You will work in a fast-paced and diverse environment and will have a management team that encourages your career development and growth.
This is similar to a Judicial Law Clerk and not a Document Reviewer.
Be part of a dynamic team in providing legal and technical services to support the Department of Justice. From emails and instant messages to electronic devices, and social media systems, we’re equipped to meet the challenge of forensically capturing, reviewing, and illuminating the “smoking gun” evidence. In this role, you will gain many intangible skills, such as time and task management, critical thinking and problem solving, the ability to communicate complicated problems in a concise manner, as well as solve complex problems using available tools.
Primary Responsibilities
- Responsibilities/Duties.
- Works under the direction of a Project Manager. Performs complex legal research for the CAO staff.
- Reviews and conduct research for ROI (Release of Information)
- Reviews new cases and conducts research into pertinent laws
- Edits previously submitted final decisions and writes/research legal opinions on newest case
- Edits and reviews cases for issuance
- Responds to citizen letters
- Reviews AMICUS briefs
- Briefs attorneys regarding legal issues, theories and draft statement of facts
Basic Qualifications
Requires a Law degree and must be barred. Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw. At least 2 years’ relevant experience.
*Extensive Cite Checking / Blue Booking Experience
*Ability to consistently deliver the highest quality of work under extreme pressure will be very important.
*Highly detail-oriented individual.
*Active security clearance, preferred.
* Writing sample will be required
Additional skills and experience that is “nice to have” but not required.
* Publication of legal writings highly preferred.
* Participation in Law Review highly preferred.
The position is in Washington, DC.
As of 1/3/25 this is a hybrid position, and they must go into the office twice a week. This could change with new administration.
