The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?
The Senior Counsel is legal counsel supporting data and analytics initiatives across Business Insurance, reporting to the Associate Group General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, Business Insurance (BI AGGC). With the growing legal and regulatory complexity for the use of external data, modeling, artificial intelligence (including generative AI (“GenAI”)) in our business, this lawyer will serve as a specialized legal expert, supporting initiatives across Business Insurance (“BI”). The role is highly collaborative across all the stakeholder teams and particularly within BI Legal and with Legal Services as a whole.

Reporting to the BI AGGC, who will remain responsible for the D&A governance and policy setting under the BI Group General Counsel, the dedicated D&A lawyer will be responsible for:

• D&A legislative and regulatory review and consulting within BI (in coordination with market, product & compliance BI Legal Services team members)
• Support of BI Analytics Governance including use case review and data modernization
• Legal framework development and support for D&A initiatives within BI
• AI/ML legal framework development for BI
• Support for GenAI business initiatives
• Collaboration with, and representation on, cross functional teams across the Enterprise with a focus on D&A effortsWhat Will You Do?
  • Employee Engagement

  • Builds and maintains strong internal and external client relationships.
  • Acts as a mentor and coach to less senior attorneys and/or paralegal/staff.
  • Helps to interpret broad enterprise, leadership strategies into actionable projects and tasks.
  • Proactively collaborates and shares ideas, finding the best way to do things for BI, while leveraging experiences from across the Enterprise.
  • Indispensable Business Partner:

  • Using in-depth knowledge of the business, delivers timely, well-rounded, high quality and courageous advice to our internal clients in support of the goals BI’s Analytics Advantage and Underwriting Modernization priorities;
  • Acts as an indispensable business partner for clients and all Legal Services to counsel on legal risks, alternatives, outcomes and legal actions which have a sizable impact on company business and future operations and maintains awareness of the fast paced external climate and legal developments;
  • Proactively identifies and communicates risk to internal and/or external customers and provides recommendations on how to mitigate that risk;
  • Builds and maintains productive and strong working relationships across the Legal Services discipline, broader enterprise as well as strong internal client and applicable external relationships;
  • Strong research, drafting, negotiation and analysis skills are a must.
  • Efficiency and Effectiveness:

  • Learns and questions the status quo to develop new, creative and innovative ways to deliver legal advice that drives toward customers solutions, convenient processes and a competitive cost structure;
  • Assists in creating frictionless ways to interact with our internal clients to make it easier for them to get the legal and compliance advice they need in order to efficiently evaluate how to pursue more opportunities in their markets;
  • Assists the business in creating convenient processes and making it easier to do business with our distribution partners and customers, and reimagining how we do business to be the undeniable choice for the customer;
  • Assists in reimagining how we deliver legal services, driven by the increasing need for speed, efficiency and agility;
  • Seeks out and uses technology investments and legal process changes into a more cost-efficient operating environment for our business clients and customers by eliminating redundancy, streamlining processes, and leveraging capabilities across Legal Services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Ten  years of prior legal experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Strong relationship, influencing and collaboration skills to cultivate and maintain relationships with internal partners within the business and across the enterprise.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to proactively identify challenges and to analyze information to make timely decisions in alignment with business priorities.
What is a Must Have?
  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent International legal degree; graduate of an accredited law school.
  • Minimum of 7 years of prior legal experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Active license to practice law in the state(s) in which representation is required.
