About the Position



We’re looking for a business-minded Senior Attorney. This role is primarily focused on strategy, growth, and external engagement, including developing and maintaining relationships with large clients, generating new business, and representing the organization publicly.

 

This position reports to and takes direction from the Board of Directors and operates as a peer to the Managing Attorney who is responsible for day-to-day management of staff, internal operations, and administrative systems. Together, the two set the strategic direction of the organization, guide its legal work, and advance our mission.

 

Ideally, this candidate will have experience in tax exempt law, a strong track record of attracting and retaining clients and public speaking. This role is the outward-facing leader for the organization who would lead the charge in speaking at industry events, faith-based organizations, press interviews and other relevant mediums like webinars. This person will serve the legal needs of large clients, guide legal strategy on major projects, and play a central role in expanding the organization’s reach.

 

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Senior Attorney – Strategy & Growth include:

 

  • Leading client development and relationship-building efforts, particularly with large nonprofit clients, associations, and aligned networks
  • Acting as a public face of the organization at conferences, on webinars, and at other events, with the ability to speak accurately and engagingly on tax-exempt law
  • Serving as a co-leader of the organization, setting strategic goals and priorities in conjunction with the Board of Directors and the Managing Attorney
  • Providing high-level legal counsel to the organization’s largest and most complex clients
  • Developing and maintaining relationships that drive consistent program service revenue
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with donors and corporate partners to generate donations
  • Setting high-level legal and organizational priorities based on qualitative and quantitative data, and monitoring progress toward strategic goals
  • Managing relationships with the largest 5–10% of clients, including strategic legal direction, delegation of work, and oversight of project execution
  • Advising attorneys on legal strategy and project management for significant transactional and litigation matters
  • Participating in organizational risk management and strategic decision-making
  • Preparing and presenting materials to the Board of Directors regarding organizational performance, growth, and challenges
  • Promoting alignment with the organization’s core values and contributing to a positive, mission-driven workplace culture
  • Providing training and mentorship to staff attorneys on relevant legal and sector-specific topics

 

Compensation

$150,000–$180,000, including bonuses

 

Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in Indiana
  • 5–15 years of experience in tax-exempt organization law
  • Strong relationship-building, networking, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to attract, grow, and retain clients
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of nonprofit organizations including politically conservative and/or faith-based organizations
  • Comfortability with Google Suite and Microsoft Office

 

Helpful Additional Experience (Not Required)

  • Existing relationships within the nonprofit or tax-exempt sector
  • Experience generating revenue or growing a book of business in a professional services or nonprofit setting
  • Experience speaking at conferences, webinars, or industry events
  • Experience advising large or complex nonprofit organizations on strategic legal matters
  • Financial literacy, including comfort reviewing budgets and financial statements
  • Exposure to human resources or personnel leadership, such as hiring, supervision, or performance management
  • Experience working closely with boards of directors or executive leadership teams

 

Salary
  • $150,000 - $180,000
