Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The District Attorney's Office is seeking an Investigative Aide to join their team! Under general supervision an Investigative Aide performs technical, non-sworn, investigation support activities for criminal investigators and attorneys in the District Attorney’s Office; assists in trial preparation activities and performs field work.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  1. Gathers and coordinates information needed by investigators, attorneys and others in support of a legal case.
  2. Reviews and researches a variety of written documents, records and other pertinent data related to a criminal or civil investigation, reviews police reports and other case information.
  3. Reviews and records information related to cases under investigation.
  4. Reviews business advertisements to determine violations of law.
  5. Prepares routine written and statistical reports. 
  6. Locates and interviews witnesses and suspects; serves subpoenas and delivers legal documents.
  7. Coordinates the scheduling of court ordered appearances and arranging transportation and/or transports and/or escorts others connected with cases into the office for interviews or to court.
  8. Transports physical evidence for analysis and/or to court.
  9. Prepares charts and diagrams, photos, or other graphics to depict information for court presentation, duplicates evidence.
  10. Collects and organizes information and documents for inclusion in case files and books for trial.
  11. Assists investigators and attorneys in a variety of other case development and trial-preparation activities.
  12. Maintains contacts and working relationships with various city, county, state, and federal government offices and private enterprises in order to obtain and assemble information.
  13. Answers/screens telephone calls and takes messages; provides information/assistance to the public, other agencies, witnesses, suspects; explains and assists the public in particular departmental policies/procedures.
  14. Assists in surveillance and undercover assignments; takes photographs.
  15. Testifies in court, as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
Basic investigative procedures and techniques; basic research techniques; public contact and public relations techniques; data gathering, compilation and display techniques; basic knowledge of civil and criminal justice system; basic knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and rules relating to investigations and evidence; basic knowledge of procedures of Court and rules of evidence in court trials; basic photography; basic knowledge of functions and authority of the District Attorney’s Office.

Ability to:
Research, compile, report and/or display information in support of a criminal or civil case; serve subpoenas; deliver documents in a timely efficient manner; learn and apply investigative principles and techniques; learn and apply basic legal principles and procedures; organize information, reports, and documents; document findings and observations; search for and obtain copies of public records; learn and apply basic knowledge of California court and corrections systems; testify in court; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.; establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of diverse socio-economic backgrounds; act in amanner that promotes good public relations, customer service, and brings credit to the office; establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; explain procedural information; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; operate a variety of office and technical equipment; work outside of normal business hours for some assignments.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which would provide the equivalent knowledge and abilities as indicated above. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Completion of academic coursework in investigation techniques, report writing, and legal aspects of evidence, and two years of sworn or non-sworn investigative support experience in a law enforcement or criminal law agency.
Completion of academic coursework in investigation techniques, report writing, and legal aspects of evidence, and four years of legal administrative support experience in a law enforcement or criminal law agency.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Requires the ability to maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under varied circumstances; ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; effectively deal with personal danger; the ability to exert a moderate amount of physical effort to stoop, crouch, and lift in performance of transporting evidence or other assigned duties; and to exert a small amount of physical effort in sedentary to light work involving moving from one area of the office to another; must be able to perceive color, shapes, and forms; requires sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as using a computer, cameras, cassette duplicators, scanners, projectors or use of other office equipment or supplies; maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observation and communicating orally with others; ability to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; involves VDT exposure.

Other Requirements:
Incumbents assigned to the District Attorney’s Office will be required to undergo an extensive personal background investigation because incumbents assigned to this department are required to deal with sensitive/restricted material from the Federal, State and local Departments of Justice.

Disaster Service Workers: 
All Sutter County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to perform certain emergency services at the direction of the department and/or County.

License or Certificate:
This classification may require a valid California driver’s license.
