Job Description

Position Summary

Provide basic administrative support services to assist in the effective functioning of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Legal Assistant 1 position will perform a range of administrative support work of a criminal law office. Incumbents in this position must be friendly, dependable, and punctual, have excellent oral and written communication skills, be able to handle difficult situations and/or people with tact and professionalism, and be able to multitask and prioritize.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following examples of duties and accountabilities illustrate the general range of tasks assigned to the position but are not intended to define the limits of required duties.  Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position. Employee must comply with all County and department policies, procedures, WAC’s, or other regulatory bodies.

Reception and Public ServiceTasks include greeting the public at a reception counter, assisting attorneys with routine paperwork, answering and directing telephone calls, taking messages and processing the daily mail.

Legal Document Processing and General Support: Tasks include data entry and scanning into case management system and word processing of legal forms according to standard procedure; reviewing correspondence and documents; discovery; court filings and notifications required for presentations in court; providing information on cases according to strict protocols of protection of confidential information; professional contact with attorneys, law enforcement and parties to legal proceedings. General support and assistance to attorneys and staff.

Education, Experience, and Licensing

Required

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  3. Computer literacy and use of standard software programs/case management systems.
  4. Telephone and personal reception skills. 
  5. General office procedures.
  6. Prior reception/secretarial experience.
  7. Valid Driver’s License: With proof of automobile insurance.
  8. Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record.
  9. Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred 
  1. Prior office support experience in legal or criminal justice office.
  2. Legal terminology & record keeping. 
  3. Bilingual in English/Spanish.

Physical Abilities and Working Conditions

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office environment involving both sitting at a desk or workstation and standing for relatively brief periods at a public reception counter or copier, in addition to delivering documents to the courts and other departments. The nature of contact with the public normally does not involve risk of harm.
Physical Requirements
The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, write, hear, speak and lift up to 50 lbs. of unequal weight.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral, and depth perception.  This job requires employees to stand and/or sit for 8+ hours per day, 5 days per week.
