BronxWorks Legal Services – Crime Victims Unit:
The Bronxworks Crime Victims Legal Services program offers free assistance to New Yorkers by advocating for the rights of crime victims, survivors of domestic violence, and other survivors of trauma. This includes providing legal assistance and consultation as well as representing survivors in family court cases, and in applications for legal status under the Violence Against Women Act.
Qualifications
· Completion of at least a Bachelor’s degree.
· Other experience required including application assistance, administrative experience, and work with the public and management of data sheets.
· Proficiency in modern business communications including personal computers, electronic mail, voicemail, facsimile and copier equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Maintain active case load.
· Prepare immigration and family court petitions for submission to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and Family Courts.
· Support clients in writing statements to reporting crimes to the NYPD or any other applicable enforcement body.
· Refer clients to other BronxWorks departments or public service organizations to best serve their specific needs.
· Perform general advocacy for the rights of crime victims, survivors of domestic violence, and other survivors of trauma.
· Organize and maintain case documents in a paper or electronic filing system.
· Meet with clients, attorneys, and other staff to discuss case details.
· Gather and analyze statutes, judicial decisions, legal articles, and other legal information.
· Work in conjunction with the department Attorney to research law and determine case strategy..
· Enter all relevant data into the department database.
· Report out numbers on monthly and quarterly basis.
· Attend internal and external agency meetings.
· Attend contract and agency training sessions as provided.
· Perform additional duties as assigned.
Skills/Abilities
· Proficient with Microsoft Office: Outlook, Power Point, Word, and Excel.
· Excellent organizacional skills.
· Excellent communication, writing and interpersonal skills.
· Must be able to effectively multi-task, manage time-sensitive documents and have exceptional organizational skills in a fast-paced environment.
· Must be able to function effectively in a busy, team-oriented environment.
· Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods.
· Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
· Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time.
· Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork.
· Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
· Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or field work.
Salary, Benefits and Hours:
