ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY II - PROCUREMENT
The Hampton City Attorney’s Office is recruiting a new Procurement Attorney. This position will serve as the primary legal advisor to the Procurement Office. Other assignments will depend on the successful candidate’s experience and interests, and may include serving as counsel to the City’s entertainment and tourism facilities; counsel to the Hampton Employees Retirement System (closed to new entrants since 1984); and legal adviser concerning federal funding programs and intellectual property matters. Transactional legal experience in contracts or procurement is required. Experience with the Virginia Public Procurement Act or in local government law is preferred. The position is anticipated to be filled as Assistant City Attorney II, which requires at least two years’ relevant legal experience. The position may be underfilled as Assistant City Attorney I if the selected candidate does not possess at least two years’ relevant legal experience. The anticipated hiring range for Assistant City Attorney II is $90,425 to $120,000. The anticipated hiring range for Assistant City Attorney I is $82,806 to $91,000. Salary offer will be based on experience.
This is an in-person position. Current policy permits telework up to two days per week, as schedule and work assignments allow. The position may require attendance at evening meetings. The selected candidate will be required to complete a criminal background check.
The City Attorney serves as the chief legal advisor to the City Council, the City Manager, and all departments, boards, commissions, and agencies of the city. The City Attorney’s Office is comprised of twelve attorneys, five paralegals, and two administrative assistants, organized into two teams – Litigation and Development & Finance (D&F). The Procurement Attorney is part of the D&F Team. Minimum Requirements:
- Requires a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school (or equivalent)
- A minimum of two (2) years of legal experience as a practicing attorney.
- Must be licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Must be an active member in good standing in the Virginia State Bar.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- Must complete a background check related to this position before any offer of employment or promotion.
Additional Requirements:
- Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
- Requires work hours beyond the standard 40-hour work week.
- Requires some local travel.
- Requires continuing legal education.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
