Position Overview:

As Motiva’s Counsel to the Major Capital Projects & Procurement teams, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with Motiva’s Business Development, Major Capital Projects, and Supply Chain organizations to deliver major refining and/or chemicals projects.

The successful candidate will serve as the primary legal advisor to the Major Capital Projects organization and coordinate the provision of other legal services by Motiva Legal (relating to HSSE, HR, Tax, Compliance, etc.) to all capital projects throughout the company. Although the position will be based in Motiva’s offices in downtown Houston, the incumbent may be required to visit the Port Arthur Manufacturing Complex to work with project personnel and address/resolve contract disputes as projects progress.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to be familiar with and able to provide legal advice in regard to the following deliverables:

  • Front End Engineering Design ("FEED") documentation

  • Engineering, Procurement and Construction ("EPC") documentation

  • Brownfield and/or greenfield refining or chemicals facilities ($400M+) supporting documentation

  • Refining and chemical megaprojects ($1B+) supporting documentation

  • Technology license agreements

  • Major subcontracts for equipment supply, construction or fabrication

The successful candidate will also be capable of effectively taking on the proactive, direct supervision and coordination of outside counsel.

Experience and Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited US law school with a license to practice law in the State of Texas.

  • Minimum eight (8+) years of experience in major project procurement law, responsible for negotiating and administering FEED and EPC contracts for refining, chemicals or LNG facilities

  • Attention to detail and time management skills.

  • Demonstrable track record as someone who can coordinate with a variety of stakeholders to deliver on business objectives.

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills including the ability to interact with all levels of staff and management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant experience representing owners, in a large law firm setting or as in-house counsel

  • Experience resolving construction related disputes prior to potential arbitration/litigation
