Role Overview

Cboe is seeking a Senior Counsel to provide legal support to Cboe’s import/export strategy and global business expansion efforts in non-US jurisdictions across the globe.  This position will work collaboratively and creatively with internal business clients, other members of the Cboe Legal Division and outside counsel to help ensure all non-US sales and marketing activities are conducted appropriately and compliantly as Cboe continues expanding into new markets, or introducing new products to existing markets, in APAC, EMEA, and the Americas.

This position will be located in Chicago, IL.

 Your responsibilities will be:

  • Counsel senior internal business clients regarding legal and compliance frameworks for engaging in sales, marketing, and educational efforts (among other things) relating to Cboe’s core proprietary products and other products and services in jurisdictions around the world.
  • Serve as primary conduit for cross border legal and regulatory inquiries from key internal business clients, providing clear, risk-based guidance in a timely fashion to support Cboe’s import/export strategy and its global business expansion efforts – all while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, rules and guidance.
     
  • Oversee regulatory licensing processes in multiple jurisdictions, maintain ongoing reporting obligations associated with those licenses, and engage with non-US financial service regulators as necessary.
     
  • Prepare application materials to request registrations for Cboe entities to engage in marketing activities in and/or to provide direct access from foreign jurisdictions.
  • Manage updates and enhancements to internal library of guidance materials.
     
  • Design and deliver targeted internal training to strengthen business awareness of selling and marketing US products and services in foreign markets.
     
  • Support the development or enhancement of templates and processes that increase efficiencies and enable clearer, more effective sharing of knowledge with internal stakeholders.
     
  • Collaborate with other attorneys to evaluate novel international regulatory questions.
     
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to navigate complex jurisdiction-specific regulatory frameworks and support Cboe’s‑ regulated entities to meet their legal and regulatory obligations globally.
     
  • Assist with the administration and optimization of Cboe’s knowledge management platform as well as the legal foreign jurisdiction budget.
     
  • Assist in selecting and managing outside counsel work on foreign jurisdiction matters.
     
  • Assist with various legal projects across the Legal Division and perform other duties as assigned.
     
  • Maintain high standards of legal and regulatory compliance and promote a culture of compliance, by among other things, helping ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements of operating regulated markets.

 The ideal candidate has:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney, including 1-2 years with a focus on options, futures, and/or other exchange traded derivative products.  Previous employment at the CFTC or SEC or a trading venue or exchange is desirable.
  • Experience with laws and regulations relating to US securities and/or commodities products, and a desire to be supporting all of Cboe’s core businesses looking to be expanding outside the U.S.
     
  • Experience supporting multinational corporations in multiple jurisdictions preferred.
     
  • Willingness to be flexible and work with uncertain and new situations and think outside the box.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Capable of working with a diverse team in multiple jurisdictions to navigate complex international regulatory issues.
  • Willingness to connect with APAC/EU colleagues and outside counsel at morning and night hours on a regular basis, as needed.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and a diverse set of responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence.

Education/License(s):

  • Bachelor's Degree and Juris Doctorate required.
     
  • Licensed to practice law.
     
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook, project collaboration and knowledge management platforms including Confluence and Jira, as well as document management and other office technologies.

At Cboe, we are committed to providing a competitive, transparent, and market‑informed total rewards program. The anticipated base salary range for this role is $172,975-$223,850, with actual compensation determined by job‑related factors such as skills, relevant experience, education, internal alignment, and location.

 

 

This role may also be eligible for annual incentive compensation and, where applicable, participation in Cboe's long-term equity programs.
