The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts (AO), an agency of the judicial branch of the federal government, is committed to serving and supporting the U.S. federal court system and the public it serves. The AO provides a broad range of legislative, legal, financial, technical, management, administrative, and program support services to the federal courts.
Duties
OPPORTUNITY: The Human Resources Office of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts (AO) is seeking student interns with backgrounds or demonstrated interest in human resources, human resource management, organizational management, public administration, business administration, and other Human Resources-related disciplines.
The AO Student Internship Program provides valuable work experience and prepares interns for careers in public service. Interns have opportunities to hone their writing, communication, research, analytical, logical, multi-tasking, and customer service skills and receive valuable networking opportunities with fellow interns, agency employees, and other government employers.
Students will work 20 hours per week during the regular school year, and are allowed to work up to 32 hours per week.
All internships at the AO are onsite at the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building (TMFJB) and telework is not permitted.
This internship opportunity is in AO's Human Resources Office (HRO).
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Corresponding with customers to address human resources questions and inquiries.
- Performing data entry to support personnel and payroll processing.
- Assisting with database management for personnel, payroll, and benefits processing.
- Collaborating with team members and other stakeholders on human resources initiatives.
- Researching human resources policies and procedures to provide accurate advice and guidance.
- Assisting with managing and organizing data from different sources.
- Assisting with the acquisitions process with focus on invoicing, payments, and processing.
- Assisting HRO staff with organizational and operational support functions.
- Conducting analysis and assisting with human resources projects and daily operations.
- Shadowing HRO staff and attending meetings to learn about how the Judiciary works and HRO's role in fulfilling the Judiciary's mission.
- Providing HRO leadership with ideas and opinions on processes and procedures based on experience or learning from academic studies.
- Sharing perspectives on the internship experience with HRO staff in the form of a written report or oral presentation.
- Attending educational and training sessions to aid with professional development, networking, and learning new skills.
- Performing general office tasks, as assigned.

Additional Qualification Requirements:
In addition to meeting the BASIC QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS, applicants must also:
- Work well in a team environment.
- Have very strong organization and communication skills and be detailed oriented.
- Have a working knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft 365.
- Have excellent writing, reading, and interpersonal skills, and be able to organize a variety of assignments simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
- The ideal candidate is an undergraduate or graduate student in Human Resources Management.
Education All students in the Student Internship Program must be enrolled in an accredited school and must be working toward a degree, diploma, certificate, etc. on a full-time or part-time basis. Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. You can receive credit for education received outside the United States if you provide evidence that it is comparable to an accredited educational institution in the United States. Student interns are eligible for up to $320 of commuting benefits cost to travel to and from their AO internship.
