
Job Title: In-House Legal Counsel
Reports to: Executive Director and CEO
Location: In-Person, Central Office
Position Type: Full-Time, Year-Round

Position Summary:The In-House Legal Counsel serves as the legal advisor for Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas (“CASLV”), providing legal guidance and support to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. This role advises executive and school leaders on a wide range of legal issues including employment law, student rights, contracts, governance, and risk management to support the school network’s mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Legal Guidance & Compliance
- Advise CASLV leadership and the Board on legal matters impacting operations and strategy.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, including FERPA, IDEA, Title IX, and Section 504.
- Monitor legal developments and adjust policies, procedures, and trainings accordingly.
Employment & Labor Law
- Provide legal support on employee relations, accommodations, investigations, and discipline.
- Ensure compliance with ADA, FMLA, Title VII, and other labor-related laws.
- Draft and review employment contracts, severance agreements, and HR policies.
Student Matters
- Support CASLV campuses with student discipline, special education, bullying, and custody matters.
- Ensure all student-related policies are legally compliant and equitable.
Contracts & Transactions
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, MOUs, leases, and procurement agreements.
- Provide risk analysis for significant partnerships and transactions.
Governance & Charter Compliance
- Advise on open meeting laws, board bylaws, ethics, and conflict of interest issues.
- Support compliance with charter authorizer requirements, renewals, and amendments.
Risk Management
- Respond to subpoenas, complaints, public records requests, and legal claims.
- Coordinate with outside counsel on litigation and complex legal matters.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Active license and good standing with the Nevada State Bar.
- At least 5 years of legal experience, preferably in education or public sector law.
Preferred:
- Prior experience advising or working with charter schools or K–12 educational institutions.
- Expertise in school law, special education, or employment law.

Work Environment:
- This is a full-time, in-person position based at CASLV's Central Office in Las Vegas with occasional travel to school campuses and board meetings.
