Purpose/Description

The Paralegal 1 provides daily support and assistance in the performance, functions, and duties of the office of Wayne County Prosecutor's Office (WCPO),and assists with the substantive legal work of the WCPO.



Responsibilities

Required Tasks

  • Write, type, edit, format, and proofread various legal documents, including pleadings, subpoenas, correspondence, and memoranda under the direction of attorneys.
  • Conduct legal research, review, read and analyze legal and other documents and report on information received from various sources.
  • Copy, scan, shred hard copy and electronic data and documents under the direction of attorneys.
  • Perform case management, including opening and closing files in the office case management system under the direction of attorneys and supervisors, calendaring, and tracking court deadlines.
  • Schedule depositions, investigative subpoenas, and court reporters.
  • Organize trial and case files, organize records and documentation to monitor case activities to ensure smooth flow, and assist with department filing and work collaboratively with the legal team.
  • Summarize preliminary examination transcripts, review other documents and legal pleadings, and prepare exhibits.
  • Perform case investigations, including witness location and other discovery assistance, research, and investigation.
  • Attend meetings with attorneys, take notes, and assist attorneys with cases, including but not limited to trial preparation.
  • Conduct interviews and contact witnesses, clients, law offices, governmental agencies, including telephone contact.
  • File documents in person and/or electronically with the district, circuit, and federal courts under the direction of attorneys.
  • Assist in the development and analysis of legal cases.
  • Review and redact records on subpoena requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements

  • An Associate degree from an accredited school in Paralegal Studies/Legal Administration; OR
  • A Paralegal certificate and 1 year of paid legal experience in a law firm; OR
  • A High School Diploma and 2 years of paid legal experience in a law firm.
