The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney seeks a Paralegal I to provide court administration and documentation assistance to professional legal staff for cases before the Circuit Court of Arlington County and the City of Falls Church. 



Responsibilities

Specific duties include: 

  • Performing administrative functions including maintaining daily dockets, and preparing weekly sentencing court dockets, composing letters and legal documents, and compiling information relevant to cases; 

  • Preparing and updating case files for hearings in a timely manner; 

  • Preparing and organizing paperwork required for collateral matters such as expungements and gun rights restorations. 

  • Communicating with defense counsel.  

  •  Using police department's database to obtain and review police reports to assist with preparing cases for trial; 

  • Issuing subpoenas for all necessary witnesses;  

  • Requesting lab reports and prior criminal convictions;  

  • Uploading and reviewing digital evidence including body worn camera (BWC) video using Axon's evidence.com software;  

  • Tracking cases using office case management system; and  

  • Serving as a liaison between the courts and law enforcement agencies for Arlington County and/or the City of Falls Church

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills to carry out their assigned tasks in a timely and complete manner; and 

  • Exceptional communication and customer service skills to work with a diverse population and manage professional relationships.



Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate, or the equivalent;  

  • Some experience as a legal assistant or a legal secretary; and 

  • Completion of a paralegal program recognized by the American Bar Association. 

 
Substitution: Additional education may be substituted for experience. 
 

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates who have completed a paralegal program recognized by the American Bar Association and have one or more of the following: 

  • Working knowledge of legal procedures and resources and of the criminal justice system; 

  • Ability to use computer programs and applications to complete work; and/or 

  • Writing and reading skills to compose and understand legal documents; 

 

Special Requirements: A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment.  It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history.  You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. 

 

Work Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some Telework is available in limited circumstances and with supervisor’s approval.
