The Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) represents the 27,000+ Flight Attendants of American Airlines, an airline that consists of aviation professionals with a diverse history brought together from multiple airlines. Since APFA’s inception in 1977, the Union has fiercely advocated for the Flight Attendant profession. It has been at the forefront of the fight for workplace equality, legislative affairs, women, and human rights.
ABOUT THIS POSITION
APFA seeks a highly motivated, organized, and dedicated attorney to manage a diverse caseload of labor and employment matters. This is an opportunity to be a part of a strong, diverse, and well-respected organization and to help APFA usher the labor movement into the 21st century. The legal team at APFA is focused on collaborating with our leaders and members to revitalize unionism. The position is hybrid and will be based in our Euless, Texas headquarters. This position will report to APFA’s General Counsel.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Staff Attorney’s key responsibilities include:
- Representing APFA in arbitration hearings.
- Ensuring compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, and relevant policies.
- Providing legal advice and counseling to APFA leadership and internal staff across departments on disciplinary grievances, contractual grievances, human resource matters, and federal and state labor laws.
- Collaborating with venders to achieve APFA’s business objectives.
- Responding to pre-litigation demands, third-party subpoenas and requests for information.
- Formulating and drafting policies.
- Monitoring developments and trends in labor law.
- Conducting legal research.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
- Current law license in good standing.
- Admitted to the State Bar of Texas or ability to gain admission within six (6) months of hire.
- At least 2 years of relevant experience working in labor, employment or civil litigation.
- Skilled in effective oral and written communication.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm under challenging circumstances.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously, with effective resolution of conflicting priorities.
- Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment.
- Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%.
- Ability to lift and relocate 30lbs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with or in the airline industry.
- Knowledge and/or experience with the RLA.
- Labor arbitration experience.
- Collective bargaining negotiations experience.
- Employment litigation experience.
- Knowledgeable and/or experienced with the NLRA.
