Job Description

The State of Montana has a decentralized human resources (HR) system. Each agency is responsible for its own recruitment and selection. This position supports the Department’s mission to improve and protect the health, wellbeing, and self-reliance of all Montanans throughout every state of their life by delivering quality legal services. The lawyer position includes, but is not limited to\:  providing legal support to and representing DPHHS; responding to requests for legal advice and guidance from departmental program staff and leadership through verbal and written legal advice and opinions; provide legal support to program staff throughout the administrative review process or proceedings.

Qualifications for this Career Opportunity

 

  • Knowledge of legal analysis principles, practices, and theories.
  • Knowledge of legal research methods and techniques, including use of LEXIS, Westlaw, and the internet.
  • Ability to analyze difficult legal problems and synthesize a course of action.
  • Ability to develop a level of confidence between themselves and legal clients.
  • Advance skill in written and oral communication.

 

    • Lawer 1
      • Meet minimum qualifications:
        • Juris Doctorate (J.D) from an accredited law school.
        • Three years of legal experience.
        • Admission to practice law in Montana, or admission within one year from the date of hire.
        • Preferred:
          • Knowledge of healthcare law or areas of law relevant to DPHHS programs.
          • Knowledge of the legislative process.
          • Knowledge of administrative review procedures, all aspects of the Montana Administrative Procedures Act (MAPA), and judicial review procedures.

 

    • Lawyer 2
      • Meet minimum qualifications:
        • Juris Doctorate (J.D) from an accredited law school.
        • Five years of legal experience.
        • Admission to practice law in Montana, or admission within one year from the date of hire.
        • Knowledge of healthcare law or areas of law relevant to DPHHS programs.
        • Knowledge of the legislative process.
        • Preferred:
          • Knowledge of administrative review procedures, all aspects of the Montana Administrative Procedures Act (MAPA), and judicial review procedures.
