Join Our Team at DCFS: Attorney 1-3

This is position services as legal counsel for the Department of Children and Family Services and Child Welfare Services (CWS) within one of nine regions throughout the State of Louisiana. This position will specialize in the area of juvenile and family law, social services law and programs.  The incumbent is independently responsible for being knowledgeable with regards to all special laws relevant to the functioning of CWS.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice law.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Incumbent's job duties require highly developed litigation and in-house counsel skills
  • Trial work includes preparing all legal documents, including affidavits, petitions, surrenders, and any other evidentiary documents for court presentations.
  • This position handles all stages of litigation from trial to final appeals.
  • Incumbent must assists program staff at all program stages and assists the program staff and medical/psychological experts in investigations in multidisciplinary team staffing's and makes recommendations concerning the department programs.
  • Incumbent will monitor legal matters and cases involving or affecting the department and the potential effect on program operations. 
  • Incumbent recommends and participates in efforts to update and revise provisions in state and federal law in the areas of Child Welfare.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as a probational appointment or a job appointment that may last up to 48 months. Job appointments may convert to probational appointments. Also, it may be filled as a detail and promoted within 12 months or by promotion of a permanent classified employee.


Work Schedule:  Typically, work hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday. Flexible work schedules are available after meeting certain criteria and is dependent upon the position you are applying for.  Some positions require working shifts.  


Work Location: Ouachita Parish

Career Progression: May be filled as an Attorney 1-3 depending on qualifications.

Compensation: Attorney job titles are eligible for premium pay of up to $2.00 per hour for hours work based on specific criteria.

  • Attorney 1 $27.08 hourly (AS-619)

  • Attorney 2 $28.98 hourly (AS-620)

  • Attorney 3 $33.18 hourly (AS-622)
