About the Role
The Head of Legal will be Mood’s first in-house counsel and a core member of the leadership team. This leader will build Mood’s legal strategy, oversee compliance across manufacturing and distribution, support commercial and vendor relationships, and guide regulatory strategy.
This is a highly cross-functional role requiring a practical, business-minded attorney who can balance speed with risk mitigation and can build scalable processes as Mood accelerates into its next stage of growth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legal Strategy & Leadership
- Serve as the principal legal advisor to the executive team, and board.
- Build and lead Mood’s in-house legal function, creating scalable processes, templates, and controls.
- Develop Mood’s legal strategy across product, commercial, corporate, regulatory, and compliance matters.
- Oversee creation and management of company policies, governance standards, and employee-facing guidelines.
- Regulatory, Product & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with regulatory regimes relevant to Mood’s product categories (e.g., FDA, FTC, DSHEA, GMP, labeling, packaging, claims substantiation).
- Partner closely with Product, R&D, and Operations on new product development, formulations, testing, and quality/safety standards.
- Lead legal review of product claims, marketing copy, packaging, and digital content.
- Develop and maintain compliance frameworks for manufacturing, supply chain, distribution, and retail channels.
- Commercial & Contracting
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including:
- Manufacturer and supplier agreements
- Distribution and retail agreements
- Licensing and IP agreements
- Marketing and partnership contracts
- Employment and contractor agreements
- Technology and SaaS contracts
- Build contract management systems and standardized templates to increase efficiency.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including:
- Corporate & Governance
- Advise on corporate structure, equity matters, and governance processes.
- Support the board on governance, compliance, and fiduciary matters as needed.
- Risk Management
- Identify, evaluate, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks across all business lines.
- Provide guidance on privacy, data protection, cybersecurity, and consumer protection compliance.
- Build processes for issue escalation, investigations, and dispute resolution.
- Manage relationships with external counsel for specialized matters.
- Employment & People
- Advise the People team on employment law matters, including policies, performance, compensation, benefits, and dispute mitigation.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment regulations as the workforce grows.
- Cross-Functional Partnership Internally and Externally
- Work tightly with Operations on manufacturing, safety, supply chain, and vendor compliance.
- Partner with Marketing on claim substantiation, content review, influencer/affiliate agreements, and brand protection.
- Collaborate with Finance, Product, IT/Data, and Sales on cross-functional legal initiatives.
- Partner closely without outside counsel where relevant to access specialized expertise
We are looking for someone who has:
- JD from an accredited law school; admitted to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 10+ years of legal experience, with significant time in-house at a high-growth consumer/CPG or digital brand.
- Deep experience with regulatory, commercial, and product-related legal issues.
- Demonstrated ability to build a legal function from zero to one.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and business partnership skills.
- Strong judgment, pragmatism, and ability to operate in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
