Job Description

The Legal Executive Group Manager is a senior management-level position responsible for accomplishing results through the management of a team or department, directing day-to-day legal activities in coordination with the Legal Function. The overall objective of this role is to the lead the Legal team that provides legal analysis, advice, guidance and decision making for the U.S. Branded Cards and Lending (BCL) Business team and the Operations functions for the BCL and Citi Retail Services Businesses (Cards Operations).

This role requires thorough understanding of the strategic direction of the BCL Business and Cards Operations group, combined with a solid conceptual / practical grounding in the laws and regulations for the geographies in which we operate. Supports in the development of medium- to long- term plans and functional strategies for the Business and Cards Operations group as well as developing and executing the same for the Legal function itself.  Management and leadership responsibility for multiple teams, including people, budget, and planning. Has authority to negotiate and make independent decisions on issues / activities that have critical impact or influence on company revenues, capital, or business operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Legal team for the BCL Business and Cards Operations group, providing support and guidance on all Legal-related matters affecting them
  • Play an active role in career development and people-related matters across Legal, including a direct role in talent review, promotion, ratings, and compensation
  • Serve as a strategic partner to Business and Operations seniors and key advisor to business stakeholders, functional partners (e.g., Risk, Compliance) and the Legal Management Council (LMC)
  • Key contributor to overall strategy, establishing direction and planning for the needs of the Cards and Cards Operations Legal team
  • Anticipate, evaluate, and appropriately respond to developments in local and national laws and regulations that impact the Business and Operations group; assist the Business and Operations teams in evolving to meet marketplace and client needs
  • Advise the Business and Operations Heads and leadership teams on legal issues and risk
  • Manage and coordinate external legal service provider relationships where appropriate
  • Manage several relationships with external legal counsels
  • Provide solutions-oriented legal support and assistance to the legal department and Business and Operations teams in accordance with strategic business needs and applicable regulatory and legal requirements
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards

Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of relevant industry experience, including experience in an in-house legal role; 10+ years' managerial experience
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational and relationship management skills
  • Experience in working with regulators/regulatory bodies is preferred
  • Proven ability to apply sound judgement while managing complex subject matter and issues
  • Experience in managing a large, geographically diverse teams across multiple cultures
  • Comprehensive knowledge of US and international laws and practices
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple complex and confidential matters under time and pressure
  • Effective negotiation skills and ability to maintain effective relationships at executive levels
  • License to practice law in good standing

Juris Doctorate or equivalent law degree
