Job Description

Organizational Location: These positions are located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Office of Principal Legal Advisor, in multiple locations as specified in this announcement. Salary: The salary range indicated in this announcement will be adjusted to include locality payment for selected duty location. General Schedule locality pay tables may be found under Salaries & Wages.

Duties

As a Supervisory Legal Assistant (OA), you will perform the following duties:

  • Supervise the daily activity of a team of legal assistants and other clerical support staff;
  • Perform basic research by reviewing and analyzing case materials, collecting related files for cases cited;
  • Perform a variety of support functions related to tracking and managing Immigration Court dockets, preparing motions and appeals;
  • Assist attorneys in preparing correspondence and basic motions;
  • Research and gather data from a variety of databases to provide the most current information related to Immigration Cases.

Salary
  • $52,205 - $67,865/year

Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the Minimum Qualification requirements as noted below.

Specialized Experience:
GS-09: Applicant must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-08 level in the Federal service that included experience such as:

  • Tracking and managing immigration court dockets.
  • Drafting non-legal memoranda such as motions and appeals.
  • Gathering and/or researching data from a variety of databases to review or analyze the related cases and files.
  • Collecting records and/or legal documents for immigration court proceedings.
Typing Requirement: In addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements, applicants for this position must show possession of the ability to type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample, with three or fewer errors. You may self-certify your proficiency in the Occupational Questionnaire.

Other Information Promotion Potential: This position is at the full performance level. Supervisory Probationary Period: This is a supervisory position. Under provisions of the Civil Service Reform Act, first time supervisors and/or managers will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period. You may also be required to complete an appropriate supervisory training course within one year of assignment to this position. Background Investigation: To ensure the accomplishment of our mission, DHS requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet these standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully obtain and maintain a background investigation as a condition of placement into this position. This may include a credit check, a review of financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Pursuant to Executive Order 12564, and the DHS Drug-Free Workplace Plan, ICE is committed to maintaining a drug-free workplace and, therefore, personnel in safety- or security-sensitive positions (testing designated positions) are subject to random drug testing.     • A copy of your latest performance appraisal including your rating; and
    • Any documentation from your agency that shows your current promotion potential.
