THE JOB:
The Legal Counsel – Labor and Employment Law is responsible for providing professional legal support to MGM Resorts International and its subsidiary organizations, with a specific focus on traditional labor and employment law. This position serves as the Legal Department’s lead on all traditional labor matters and partners closely with the Labor Relations and Strategy teams in arbitrations, settlement discussions, and union negotiations. In addition, the Legal Counsel collaborates with colleagues to advise on a wide range of employment-related issues and oversees litigation, including cases handled internally. The role requires strong legal acumen, strategic thinking, and the ability to manage complex labor matters in a dynamic, high-profile environment.
THE DAY-TO-DAY:
- Respond to National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges and other federal and state administrative claims involving allegations of discrimination, harassment, or retaliation.
- Provide timely, practical employment law advice and counsel to Human Resources and operational business units on a wide range of labor and employment matters.
- Collaborate with internal Centers of Excellence to review, develop, and ensure legally compliant labor and employment-related policies, procedures, standard forms, plans, and documentation.
- Advise on the interpretation, implementation, and administration of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), and draft associated memoranda, policies, procedures, and legal documents aligned with contractual obligations.
- Represent the company in traditional labor matters, including labor arbitrations, grievance proceedings, and collective bargaining negotiations.
- Prepare responses and represent MGM Resorts International and its subsidiaries in connection with complaints and claims filed with federal/state agencies or courts (e.g., NLRB, EEOC).
- Conduct legal research on labor and employment issues and provide guidance on compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Manage outside counsel activities, including reviewing invoices, ensuring adherence to billing guidelines, and coordinating updates for insurance carriers when applicable.
- Deliver sound, strategic, and well-reasoned legal advice to internal stakeholders across various departments.
- Cultivate and maintain effective relationships with business leaders and cross-functional teams that require legal support.
- Demonstrate leadership, collaboration, and teamwork in a fast-paced, high-volume legal environment.
- Supervise and provide guidance to paralegals and legal staff on assignments and workflows.
- Exercise discretion, independent judgment, and high-level legal skills in managing complex labor and employment issues.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
- The ideal candidate will be a seasoned legal professional holding a Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- They will have six + years of progressively responsible legal practice, including at least two years of direct experience in traditional labor law. This includes representing employers before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and other federal or state administrative agencies.
- The candidate will have demonstrated expertise in interpreting, implementing, and administering Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), and be skilled in drafting related policies, procedures, memoranda, and legal documentation. They will also have hands-on experience representing companies in labor arbitrations and CBA negotiations.
- Experience defending public corporations in labor and employment matters is essential. The candidate will possess strong analytical, advocacy, and communication skills, with the ability to provide sound, business-oriented legal advice in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. A collaborative mindset and the ability to build trusted relationships across business functions are critical.
- Experience supervising legal staff or paralegals is a plus.
- The role requires a willingness to travel domestically as needed to support labor negotiations, arbitrations, and other business needs.
