Job Description

Under the direction of the Vice President, Content Protection (Americas) (“VP”), this position will be responsible for executing the strategy for and managing anti-piracy legal matters in North America and South America on behalf of the Motion Picture Association, Inc. (“MPA”), the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (“ACE”), and MPA/ACE member companies, as well as assisting with other key litigation and advocacy initiatives. The Litigation Counsel will also work closely to develop enforcement strategies for the U.S., Canada, and Latin America (“LATAM”), build consensus and support on objectives and goals, and manage outside counsel. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the VP to proactively develop long term content protection enforcement strategies to comprehensively address piracy of MPA and ACE member companies’ content in the Americas using a combination of civil litigation, criminal enforcement, voluntary initiatives, and other strategic tactics as appropriate.
  • Oversee and proactively manage litigation and legal support matters related to content protection enforcement in the U.S., Canada, and LATAM, as well as assist with other litigation and advocacy initiatives.
  • This position will take a “hands on” approach to managing litigation, including working with outside counsel in drafting motions, taking depositions, drafting discovery requests and responses, and otherwise handling all aspects of content protection enforcement litigation.
  • Successfully coordinate with and build effective relationships with member companies, outside legal counsel, internal constituents, and other external constituents to build consensus on content protection enforcement and litigation matters in the regions.
  • Manage communications with member studios and outside counsel in support of content protection legal issues and cases.
  • Provide in-house legal support to MPA’s content protection investigations teams in the Americas, including proactively identifying new targets for potential litigation.
  • Supervising pre-litigation investigation efforts, which may include coordinating the sending of cease-and-desist notices to potential targets, drafting settlement agreements, and reviewing documents as needed.  
  • Collaborate with and support advocacy efforts by regional government affairs teams related to content protection enforcement.
  • Other related tasks and projects as assigned. 

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree and hands-on experience overseeing civil litigation is required.
  • Minimum of 4-6 years of litigation experience.
  • Experience in copyright law and criminal litigation strongly preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish (oral and written) is required.
  • Proficiency in Portuguese (oral and written) strongly preferred.
  • Experience with litigation or legal matters in the LATAM region strongly preferred.
  • Current admission to practice law.

  • Must possess the ability to work independently and to gather, analyze, and disseminate information accurately and timely.   
  • Must display sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Must possess the ability to effectively interface with a variety of people and work well in stressful situations.
  • Must be willing to travel frequently, including monthly trips within the region and/or overseas.

 

Location: Washington, DC, Los Angeles, CA, or Mexico City regions.
