Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This is a non-represented position (no union affiliation) and is subject to the provisions of the Personnel Rules of the Municipality of Anchorage.

DEPARTMENT: Municipal Attorney - Criminal Division
HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
LOCATION: 632 West 6th Avenue

Example of Duties

Provide full range of secretarial support to professional legal staff. Produce and draft legal documents such as pleadings, affidavits, petition to revoke probation, summons, warrants and general correspondence. Exercise editorial discretion regarding appropriate format, legal citations, exhibits, grammar and syntax. Apply an extensive knowledge of criminal adjudication and municipal code rules, procedures and court filing requirements in the performance of the required tasks. Establish and maintain case files within the department's case management system. Monitor compliance with court ordered conditions of probation related to criminal cases; includes monitoring assignment to rehabilitative programs in judgments issued by the courts and communicating with rehabilitative programs to determine compliance. Attend weekly court hearings regarding probation. 

Prepare and file court pleadings, victim correspondence, and other documents at the request of the court and attorneys. establish, maintain, and organize physical and electronic case files. Prepare physical and electronic discovery, including redaction. Perform research in connection with specific matters. Communicate with, prepare documents for, and assist law enforcement, corrections, the court, victims, defendants, defense attorneys, members of the public, and other agencies as needed. Provide backup and assistance to all other support staff positions. Assist attorneys as needed. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and four (4) years of experience in legal office practices and procedures, legal research, court processing procedures, and automated and manual record keeping systems, one (1) year of which must have been at the level of Legal Secretary I with the Municipality of Anchorage, or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR

Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies, or similar discipline and two (2) years of experience in legal office practices and procedures, legal research, court processing procedures, and automated and manual record keeping systems, one (1) year of which must have been at the level of Legal Secretary I with the Municipality of Anchorage, or the equivalent elsewhere.

All applicants must possess and/or complete:

  • Typing test at a net speed of 60 words per minute at time of hire. (Must be attached to your application)
  • Satisfactory national criminal background investigation (13 AAC 85.010, and 13 AAC 85.210) and financial review at time of hire. 
  • Satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160 and AS 12.62.400) at time of hire. 
  • State of Alaska Notary Public Commission within 30 days of hire. 
  • Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) certification and Tiburon clearance within 30 days of hire

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from date requested. The processing fee of $47.00 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable) is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position requires Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) certification and Tiburon clearance within 30 days of hire.  If the individual selected for this position fails to obtain these within 30 days of hire, they will be terminated.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application.  Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment.  The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
