This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly position with the Social Services. For more information on the Social Services, please visit https://dss.sd.gov/ .

The Legal Assistant plays an integral role in the legal team by providing critical support to the attorneys as they utilize their legal expertise on the more complex aspects of a case. The legal assistant performs secretarial/clerical duties using legal terminology, procedures, and documents, including typing, proofing, and/or finalizing confidential and sensitive letters, memos, legal documents, and legal forms (e.g. summons, complaints, subpoenas, briefs, notices of hearings, responses); electronically files legal documents in the South Dakota and District Courts, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, utilizing each court's electronic filing system; researching information using various sources for legal documents, forms, and filings.

Licenses and Certifications:

Bachelor's degree in a relatable field preferred.

A dependable, friendly, approachable and positive attitude and is able to conduct themselves in a professional manner with the public and in an office environment. The candidate will be able to work independently, keep on track, and accomplish tasks without direct supervision. Some experience working in a law firm, court, or similar legal service setting is strongly desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge: Basic knowledge of legal terminology, principles, and practices. Familiarity with office protocols, Microsoft Office products, Adobe Acrobat.

Skill to: Be proficient in typing, English language, and grammar.

Ability to: Establish and maintain effective professional relationships; communicate clearly; be a willing learner of new topics; use facts to arrive at logical conclusions; use discretion in handling confidential material.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
