Job Summary/Purpose

Responsible for performing legal functions that will assist others in recommending key policies, courses of action, rules, systems, or processes in strategically important areas. Anticipates issues and develops effective ways of resolving them. Effectively uses contacts and resources as necessary to accomplish goals. Functions effectively within the larger Company. Understands the business processes across and through the Company that are relevant to his or her practice area or specialty.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

This position is within the company’s litigation section which provides legal support to the business units of a major public utility located in Texas. The successful candidate will be charged with responsibility for handling condemnation proceedings/ litigation around the state.

  • Effectively drives multiple tasks, projects and initiatives, both long and short term.
  • Surpasses expectations by exceeding quality standards and/or deadlines.
  • Responsible for surfacing underlying or hidden problems and patterns and applying basic analytical skills in providing legal services with moderate oversight.
  • Demonstrates expertise and relevant experience.
  • With moderate oversight, responsible for doing the following very well: researching relevant points effectively; drafting routine documents, negotiating routine matters, and/or performing other assigned job functions; providing effective legal support to more senior attorneys, including litigation support to first or second chair counsel as applicable; and handling a variety of discrete matters independently.
  • Promotes best practices to improve work processes.
  • Views the challenge of supporting other organizations as an opportunity to develop new skills or gain proficiency.
  • Effectively supervises paraprofessionals and administrative staff.
  • Responsible for leading discrete initiatives or projects to successful resolution.
  • Must function as a strong team player.
  • Responsible for generating a broad understanding and support for proposals and points of view.
  • Broad-based knowledge and experience in the utility business would be helpful, but not required.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to handle their own docket of cases individually, or as part of a litigation team.
  • The daily work schedule may occasionally exceed ordinary business hours. 
  • This position requires working in person from employer's office in Beaumont, Texas. 
  • Attendance and participation in regularly scheduled in-person meetings, conferences, hearings, court appearances, mediations/arbitration, and trials.
  • Some in state and out of state travel may be required, when needed.  
  • Attendance at industry/company related functions and providing storm restoration support is also expected. The candidate must also be comfortable interacting with members of senior management and company executives.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum education required of the position

             A Juris Doctorate, current license to practice law in the State of Texas and litigation experience is preferred. 

Minimum experience required of the position

  • Senior Counsel: 7+ years in a law firm or in-house handling condemnations and/or litigation matters.  

Preferred Experience:

  • 7 or more years of experience in a firm or in-house in one or more applicable areas of Litigation. 
  • Graduation from an accredited law school; membership in good standing in the Texas Bar; and more than 7 years of experience in state and federal courts. 
  • The ability to individually manage a docket of cases assigned, with minimal supervision. 
  • Drafting Petitions, Answers, propounding and responding to discovery, attending hearings, conducting and defending depositions (experts and lay witnesses), handling all aspects of motion practice, preparing Pre-Trial Orders, and preparing cases for mediations/arbitrations, judge and jury trials, and appeals.
