Purpose:

Athene is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented attorney to join its Legal team as Counsel – Insurance Products in the West Des Moines office. This role will support the development, filing, and ongoing administration of Athene’s annuity products. The position is designed for an early-career attorney who is interested in building expertise at the intersection of insurance products, regulation, and business strategy.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior attorneys and cross-functional partners to provide practical legal support on product development initiatives, regulatory filings, and contract matters. This is a strong opportunity for a lawyer with solid foundational skills in legal writing, research, and contracting who is looking to grow within a collaborative, business-facing legal team.

Accountabilities:

Product Development & Regulatory Support

• Assist in drafting and reviewing annuity product contracts, forms, and related documentation.
• Conduct legal research and provide analysis on product features, regulatory requirements, and filing considerations.
• Support responses to state insurance department questions, objections, and information requests.
• Partner with internal stakeholders to help advance product filings and approvals.

Regulatory & Compliance

• Perform legal research on state and federal regulatory requirements applicable to insurance and financial products.
• Support compliance analysis related to product design and administration.
• Assist in monitoring regulatory developments and evaluating potential impact on existing and new products.

Contracting & Legal Support

• Draft and review a variety of agreements, including vendor, licensing, and product-related contracts.
• Support contract negotiations under the guidance of senior attorneys.
• Provide clear, practical legal guidance to internal business partners.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with product, actuarial, compliance, and operations teams to support product initiatives.
• Participate in internal meetings and contribute to issue-spotting and risk assessment discussions.
• Build strong working relationships across functions through responsive and solutions-oriented support.

Qualifications and Experience:

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• 2–4 years of relevant legal experience.
• Strong legal research and writing skills.
• Experience drafting and/or reviewing contracts.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.

Preferred

• Experience with insurance, financial services, or regulatory environments.
• Familiarity with state or federal regulatory frameworks.
• Exposure to the Internal Revenue Code or financial product taxation concepts.
• Experience with contract drafting and negotiation.
