JD degree with membership in the Texas State Bar with at least 3 years related work experience post Bar admission
3 to 7 years of commercial legal experience in private practice or an in-house environment
Experience drafting and negotiating commercial and other forms of agreements
Previous experience in physical commodity trading, maritime law, financial trading or knowledge of the oil and gas industry would be considered an asset
Long-term strategic thinking and creative problem-solving abilities to address business requirements and develop legal solutions for unique business circumstances that will best serve the Corporation's interests
Demonstrated ability to work towards achieving a desired business outcome within corporate and legal parameters
Ability to be forceful, but diplomatic when advancing the Corporation's position in business transactions
Ability to resolve disputes using negotiation and alternative dispute resolution principles
A high degree of flexibility and the ability to readily adapt to changes in our business priorities and plans
Responsibilities:
Draft contracts, templates, policies, communications
Create, update, and monitor legal procedures and processes
Provide legal support to internal clients during the preparation, review and negotiation of transactions
Solve complex problems in demanding business situations and provide counsel and guidance to management
Manage contract negotiations and disputes
Supervise and ensure strategic use of outside legal services
Review opinions documents prepared by outside counsel and other internal legal staff
Educate and mentor client group, lawyers, support staff on legal issues related to Corporation's activities
Identify and manage areas of legal risk; effectively protect Corporation's assets, including goodwill and reputation
Understand and address issues, needs and desired outcomes while handling legal, commercial, and other matters
Advise on and manage significant claims, litigation
Contribute to innovation in effective and efficient business processes
Participate on corporate working groups, committees, or project teams in project development and providing legal expertise and strategic advice
Location and other Key Details:
This is an office-based role; you will work out of our Houston office, located at 2 Allen Centre, 1200 Smith St.
Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
