Litigation Paralegal Personal Injury & Collections

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Paralegal

Reports To: Paralegal Committee Member

Jackson Walker, the largest law firm in Texas, has an exciting full-time employment opportunity for a Litigation Paralegal (Personal Injury & Collections) in our San Antonio office. The Litigation Paralegal (Personal Injury & Collections) will assist attorneys with arbitration case files, client collection docket, as well as all phases of litigation matters noted below.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

Arbitration Cases:

  • Prepare conflict lists for arbitrators upon receipt of new arbitration files.
  • Issue discovery requests for new cases and assist in responding to pending discovery matters.
  • Prepare initial disclosures for new cases.

Pre-Trial for Litigation Matters:

  • Draft and issue discovery and disclosures to counsel.
  • Obtain medical/billing records in all cases, prepare medical briefs and maintain index of records sent to experts, updating throughout proceedings.
  • Review and approve written deposition notices for issuance
  • Hire various experts and coordinate their involvement in case: medical billing auditors, medical experts, life care planners, economists, and vocation experts.
  • Issue and process client document/witness requests for attorney meetings.
  • Schedule depositions, maintain case calendars, and follow up with court reporters.
  • Conduct background checks and social media searches on plaintiffs/claimants.
  • Order police records and body cam footage for auto accident cases.

Collection Docket General:

  • Input claims into Database and Case Summary.
  • Follow up on claim files with insurance carriers and individuals, negotiating settlements prior to litigation.
  • Prepare and share client documents with insurance adjusters and counsel.
  • Obtain and save Texas Railroad Commission reports for gas damage cases.
  • Verify receipt of notices and conduct background checks through TLO or Secretary of State records for claims with non-responsive parties.
  • Track payments made to client and forward records to the client's Claims Department.
  • Prepare quarterly reports for client's general counsel, reviewing litigation cases and collection matters.
  • Assist individuals in reinstating their licenses.

Collection Docket Litigation Preparation:

  • Draft lawsuits, obtain itemizations for each petition filed and coordinate service of process.
  • Prepare Motions for Substitute Service, Motions for Entry of Default Judgments and necessary court documentation when required.
  • Calculate judgments upon suit default, including service fees and court costs.
  • Obtain Final Judgments and send final payment notices to defendants.
  • Prepare and file Abstracts of Judgment or suspend individual licenses through the Texas Department of Public Safety.
  • Work with client representatives on post-judgment processes, including payment tracking and license reinstatement documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned by the employer.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Proficiency in document management systems and ShareFile.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints.
  • Ability to proofread typed material for grammatical, typographical or spelling errors.
  • Ability to travel locally and nationally in private or public transportation.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate in person, by e-mail and telephone with clients, attorneys and staff to provide information with courtesy and tact.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED; paralegal certification required.
  • Substantial equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree or paralegal certification.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years' experience within a law firm with demonstrated knowledge of arbitration processes and collection litigation.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise and temperature.
  • Work occasionally requires more than 40 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position; may require irregular hours.
