POSITION OVERVIEW
The Intellectual Property Legal Intern will work alongside experienced IP attorneys and specialists to support Magna’s global IP operations. This role provides hands-on experience in patent, trademark, and copyright matters, as well as exposure to the strategic considerations behind managing a large, worldwide IP portfolio. The internship is designed for law students interested in a career in intellectual property or technology law.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on patent, trademark, and copyright issues.
• Assist in freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses, prior art searches, and competitive IP landscape reviews.
• Support patent prosecution activities, including reviewing invention disclosures and assisting with drafting claim charts or IDS filings.
• Participate in trademark clearance projects, enforcement actions, and brand protection initiatives.
• Review and summarize IP-related agreements such as NDAs, licensing agreements, and collaborative research agreements.
• Assist in developing internal IP training materials and process documentation.
• Attend meetings with cross-functional teams, including R&D, engineering, and marketing groups.
• Contribute to special projects involving IP portfolio analytics, process optimization, or emerging technology areas (e.g., AI, sustainability, digital platforms)
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Strong academic performance with demonstrated interest in intellectual property law.
• Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
• Proactive mindset, curiosity, and willingness to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Strong communication skills and comfort engaging with cross-functional teams.
• Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, globally oriented environment.
• Familiarity with patents (through coursework, clinics, or prior experience) is a plus.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
• Current law student enrolled in an accredited J.D. program (completion of 1L or 2L year preferred).
• College Diploma with science or engineering major
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS:
• Proficient Computer knowledge and skills, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Professional Communication skills (written and verbal)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• Normal amount of sitting or standing, average mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer.
