Job Description

Corrections professionals who foster a humane and secure environment and ensure public safety by preparing individuals for successful reentry into our communities.

Duties

Designs and implements leisure-time activities in the areas of individual and team sports, and promotes maximum involvement of institution inmates in recreation activities and services through the establishment of leagues, tournaments, etc.

Plans the institution's sports program, to include intramural sports programs and tournaments, as well as additional activities made possible through available resources.

Develops, improvises, and adapts the various recreational activities to the wide range of participant interests and needs, and must meet the limitation of funds, facilities, equipment, and volunteer and other staff support available.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staffs correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements.

Education:

GL-07: 1 full year of graduate level education or Superior Academic Achievement.

GL-09: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate, education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study - physical education.

OR

Experience:

GL-07: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the GL-05 grade level. Experience that demonstrates the ability to plan, supervise, administer or carry out a sports program that includes a variety of individual and team sports.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:

  • Experience in developing team sports, activities and tournaments.
  • Experience in developing and overseeing a recreation program’s daily operation and primarily organize and direct participants.
  • Experience in developing the skills needed for participation to include teaching the techniques and rules of sports to participants, officials and umpires in a recreational program.

GL-09: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the GL-07 grade level. Experience that provides a thorough knowledge of the physical and psychological factors of individual and team sports and have administered a variety of recreational activities such as team sports, developed recreational program plans and/or budget requirements for a segment of a larger recreational program covering the needs of a varying target population and a wide variety of sporting events.

Applicants at this level have the ability to adapt and develop program activities to meet the divergent needs of an inmate population.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:

  • Experience in managing or administering a sports program in a community, industrial activity, or secondary school or college.
  • Experience in planning, teaching or evaluating a physical education curriculum for secondary or higher academic levels.
  • Experience in managing or umpiring, or officiating at amateur or professional athletic events, competitions, or games.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience:

GL-07 and GL-09: You may have a combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience. This experience must have equipped you with the particular qualifications to perform the major duties of this position as described above.

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

In order to be creditable under this provision, superior academic achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Other Information This position IS included in the bargaining unit. In accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3307, a maximum entry age of 36 has been established for initial appointment to a position in a Bureau of Prisons institution. The representative rate for this position is $80,742 per annum ($38.69 per hour). Special Conditions of Employment Section: Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks. All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm. The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees. Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques," three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
